Wow, great tips - thanks guys - I'll pick up a new tool (hehehe, tool) and give it another go.

Brought my IRO out today, don't like riding brakeless so much, but it's manageable for the short distance I go to Union/work. Pretty sure I'm not going to attempt riding up here to Whitby brakeless, the idea of going down the Rouge Hill alone bothers me Won't be until Saturday until I can get some brakes bought, unless I can get out early sometime.

I also just took a look at the Master30-39 category and I came in at the same time as the 12th placed geared finisher. score!

article about some new laws passed in chicago, including the open door surprise and turning right infront of a cyclist

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...,4966178.story

would be nice to see these in toronto

Isn't it already $150 for dangerously opening your door into traffic in Toronto? That 3' rule looks pretty sweet (if it's actually enforced).

We do have laws for these two things -- I'd guess that "right in front of cyclist" falls under unsafe right turn, but it would be nice to have some clarification as to how a bike lane changes the "keeping right at the curb" part. As for the door prize:

Highway Traffic Act, Section 165, requires that no person shall open the door of a motor vehicle on a highway without first taking due precautions to ensure that his or her act will not interfere with the movement of or endanger any other person or vehicle: (Fine $110 and two demerit points). [Stolen from City of Toronto cycling website]

If only it was enforced on a regular basis... My buddy had a cop (off duty, civilian car) open his door leading to a not-so-bad accident - he managed to stop before anything terrible happened, but he still hit his door. Unfortunatley, we found out he was a cop because my buddy was pissed off enough to spit in this guys face... Oops. No foul came of it, luckily.

Is spitting on someone considered assault?

Kinda like the reason they don't do the dock jump from Johnny's houseboat on the island anymore.. I think people got really disgustingly sick on account of all the goose poop the last time.

Pretty sure it is, especially an officer - both my buddy and I were *really* surprised that he never got a ticket or taken in. Lessons learned re: road rage management there

hear about that off duty cop that waved his gun in a road rage incident? Cops are ppl too and subject to being jack*****es as well. Wasn't it an offduty that thumped that cyclist on film last year for NOT running the yellow?

IIRC, he was on forced mental health leave.

The DSR site reminded me... I know some of you are doing the Paris/Ancaster on Sunday, but is anyone going to Global Gutz? I have no clue on the actual race details... where can I find them? Not able to get into town to a store for a flyer check (ironically I got one for the AfterKat, heh)...

I'm doing the CN Tower climb Saturday for a warm up, yay for doing stuff.

Also, for those doing the Paris/Ancaster - what tyres/sizes would you run? I only have a max. of 25s now, thinking they'd be crap for gravel/grass (esp being that they're road treads) - my understanding is a lot of it is mixed terrain, but it sounds like a kickass event to try out... For next year, would I need a competition license? As I go through this year, I might want to get more involved and actually compete a bit (I still fear I'm way weaker than I need to be).

GG's main site is here: https://www.messmedia.org/globalgutz/ but I'm not sure who is organizing locally. Haven't heard any buzz as yet.

went to wheels of bloor

no bianchi, they had some beautifull colnago's on sale for $1400 but only small sizes left (likely why they were on sale), and a flat blue cinelli i would kill for but was out of my price range

a lot of cool stuff but pretty much all out of my price range which i was kind of expecting, cool to check out those shops anyways

also went to trek since it's right by my place, that place sucks

There was a "safety blitz" in front of the shop today. Cops hiding right down the street nailing people who weren't doing full stop, 2 feet on the ground stops at all/2-ways. Re-****ing tarded.

I've also seen one of these "operations" on Beverley @ Baldwin in the recent past.

Hmm spring campaign starting early this year? Good to know. I often think of the spring bear hunt we used to have in this province. Poor old bears coming out of their dens, blinking in the bright light after a long dark winter, half-starved, just looking to ease themselves into spring, and they unknowingly walk straight into a baited trap.

Two feet wtf? Crikey that would be like requiring drivers to put the car in neutral at a stop. yaright. The problem with two feet down to stop is that motorists driving crossways to your path in the intersection quite commonly seize the initiative and try to steal your right-of-way. That 1-2 seconds it takes a cyclist to get back up and rolling is enough time for them to lose patience, react to lost patience, and jump out in front. Never fails to annoy.

I'm sure they could show me in the Highway Traffic Act (HTA 136) where they've crayoned in " a bicycle mast stop and [the cyclist] put both feets on the ground."
