While in Europe I was running 46x18 and it was good on the uphills, easy to stop and easy to get going but I definitely felt like I rode a lot slower... and yes, I'm aware that this is because of me and not the gear ratio but it definitely would take some time for me to adjust.

I went back to 46x15 the other night and I've got my power back but I kind of enjoyed the lighter gear ratio so I may end up dropping it back down in the near future - perhaps 46x17

PS Keith - I haven't forgotten that I owe you for finishin' up those wheels. I'll get in touch this week.

Because you are a beast that regularly snaps crank arms off from raging torque.

Seriously though, I started out with 50x15, which was brutal, then quickly went down to 48x15, and now I'm running 47x16 on the capo and 48x18 on the jamis. Both are pretty comfy ratios, and once you start spinning, there's not a whole lotta diff in cruising speed...

That's a 6.6 gear-inch difference. However I find the perceived effort at the same cadence is much lower on the 42x16, so that's the easy winner.
I hear you. I'm 39:17 at 62 inches. I figured I'd keep a 80rmp avg. cadence, corresponding to ~24kph, which is very reasonable for the commute (w. panniers), running errands and the occasional longer ride. I also daily go across the Avenue Rd climb to St Clair so it's great (although going down means >170rpm...) I do bottom out a bit on long flat stretches but do get a nice spin... Anyways 70" was fine also but the difference is noticeable.

I ride 46x17 (71.1GI) and find it comfortable upto around 50km/h (30mph, my top speed so far and it was some crazy rpm-age that I'm not quite used to yet) - hills aren't such a pain and I can still motor fairly nicely with it.

I left 10 minutes late for the train this morning, so I had to pick up the pace - got over to Danforth GO with 9 minutes to spare (7:39->8:14) averaging 17.3mph which is a really good pace for me in town - with no food in me I started feeling a sag going up the hill to Woodbine, so breakfast might be a good idea!
I might get off at Rouge Hill tonight and ride the waterfront a bit.

That bike tower was awesome, alarmingly fast movement though - I'd be paranoid with it handling my own bike(s) heh.

I'm still in winter mode 42x16. Time to switch back to 42x14.

Simply a case of optics as it's becoming increasing easier to find these places with thermal imaging from a chopper and hydro usage. Meth labs and such require good old fashioned police work, and therefore less likely to be found.

Bikes: Menonite black urbanite, probably enough spare parts to make anther one.

i always found an decrease in gear inches always related to an increase in average speed. when i first started riding fixed it was 46x16 and since then i've been comfortable at around 69-71", 42 or 39x16 on 700x28s. geez, i don't even have a 52x16 on my road bike...

no im probably going to stay where i am or pop up five more gear inches. i think i want to plateau first, before really swapping **** around, and i DO have to keep the don mills hill in mind on my northbound commute.

Danhalening today.

Okay so here is the deal. Talked to iro and they will ship here USPS so we don't get screwed by UPS. I'm ordering a set of the hubs tomorrow and will order for those who want some. So far Cam, Stuart and Flim have expressed interest. Anyone who wants to get some can pm me or just reply here. No duties, pst and gst are charged + Canada post fee. Let me know asap.

Yeah, it took me many rides home from school to master it, ******* hill.

Those IRO hubs are so tempting, but i cant, it'll force me to build another bike, and I just dont have to room. *covers face with hand, waves away hubs*

Yes please, one set for now I think. How'd you want to handle "the exchange" (tm)?

i know that's standard gearing for modern road bikes but i've tried it but could never use it practically. most the old roadies riding fixed in the off season would usually push a 65-70" gear as far as i know...

that tokyo bike parking tower is amazing. if we had something like that hear i would pay to use it. it looks like the machine is pretty gentle with the bikes too. have to wonder what happens what happens when the machine gets jammed though...

An interesting note about UPS which I encountered when purchasing my camera - apparently you don't get dinged with the insane UPS brokerage fees if you use expedited shipping which was only a tiny bit more than the regular shipping... I'm not sure how that applies across the board but it may be worth looking into...

People can pm the details of what they want--hub size and how many holes 32 or 36 and how many sets they want. Once they arrive we can arrange a time to meet and swap swag.

I used UPS once and wasn't thrilled. I has stuff sent from Nasbar USPS and its always cheap so I figure go with what worked before.

yeah it seems to catch it by the lugnuts, doesnt really fack with the frame or anything, and it seems simple enough not to jam, unless you know, idiot factor.

the thing about the super high range that was nice, i could keep getting power out of my optimal cadence blasting down massive hills... it was a really rarely used range, usually came into play on long flats of huge downs.

one nice thing bout having so much gears was the constant shifting, it was fun to fine-tune constantly, but i agree it took away from the simple fun of getting on and riding around.

They're fixed/free by the looks - 30 bucks across the board from what I gather on the IRO site - extra $2 for spacing above 120mm. Page here

Thanks pyze, pm on it's way.

Yeah, my 'cross bike has a 50/34 compact crankset and a 12-25 cassette. I'm thinking about putting a 46t up front both because I don't really ever use the highest end of the full range, but also because I'd like a little more overlap between my chainrings. I've also considered just going with a single 42t up front and a slightly wider cassette range.

uhh.. espresso fueled rambling.
