I'm hitting the Moss Park Farmers' Market for 2$ baskets of veg and fruit. This year we are trying to do that 100mile source of food limit. As fuel cost peak ..so do food prices, locally sourced hopefully might be a bit cheaper. I'm glad Leslieville has it's own butchers (even an organic one), bakers, my buddy's cheese shop near Logan (Yum)

sorauren park, although now that i think about it liberty village and dufferin grove are only a few more blocks away. (high park doesn't count!!)

not many fruits or veggies yet, but considering this is the second week in operation it's looking good.

Weird morning, was raining when I woke up so I re-fitted my fenders, then I ended up leaving late, so I dipped down Yonge from College and took the train from Union instead of heading east. Drenched in sweat from the waterproofs/humidity/warmth and then cold on the train from the AC that was still on, meh.

Anyone going to the CMWC Art show opening tomorrow night? (9pm @ 152 Augusta IIRC)

Nothing worse than a slow day at work with an intermittent 'net connection - computers are so boring without the internet! :p

Thanks for the pic links Matt, Gurgus :)

No problem. Yeah, I was having internet issues as well. Its almost as fun as getting chastised by roadies.

kylehutton 06-03-08 12:47 PM

well, the fixed gear is now, in my eyes, officially a mainstream trend.

i've had 4 guys (35 - 40, business suit, accountant/lawyer types) come into my store today

they all say "hey, is that one of those fixies?"

and they all ask how much it would take to buy mine from me
and then get upset when its more than the $200 they are willing to spend.

No kidding, I was drafting three with "La Vita" jerseys on, my buddy and I pull up to the lead guy and I offer to pull (as we had been drafting for free), he was a real jerk about it mocking me all "Yeah buddy! Pull as hard as you like! Go man, PULL! HARDER, go GO!" as I pulled away so I look back at him, not sure to take him seriously or not, then decide he's just being a dink and found someone else to ride with :)) I figured they'd welcome the pull, or at least the offer heh. The other two seemed cool enough, no drama, no love lost.

As it looks like Rob is back around... we should start thinking about a date (in July?) for the Niagara Falls fixed trip(tm) - I personally want to try to camp out and do it outdoorsy, but that means carrying lots of **** - so I'm not sure about that yet (though I can soon mount a rack on the Rob Roy) - thoughts?

exhibitx 06-03-08 04:47 PM

just finished installing the planet bike cascadia fenders from mec

definitely a nice improvement over the hardcore fenders, which are like $8 cheaper

better hardware (i had stripped 2 of the old eyelet screws and broke one in half while it was still in the eyelet after the winter, new ones use allen heads), front fender uses 2 spokes on each side instead of 1, much more stable and easier to align, the double spokes on each side are now one piece instead of two, this always bugged the hell out of me, so much easier to align now, i didn't have to align the rear at all, it came together in only a few minutes ... front one was a little more work because of the brake shifting it around, mud flaps are way bigger and should be way better ... other than those things they are more or less the same

not bad for $26 pre-drilled fenders

Operator.. now that you're back, how bout some pics of your much hyped wheel-build?

I've got my heart set on formula/velocity deep-v rims for my FG, but I can't decide on the colour of the rims. Should I get unpainted, black, yellow, or something else? So hard to decide... (I'd probably get machined all-black, but can't find anything on ebay :( )

something like this?

jeremywhitehorn 06-03-08 09:03 PM

did you guys see this? i love the rotafix crowd if for nothing else other than their ingenuity. not sure why i get so excited about simple solutions to little problems like this. something about the path of least resistance...

oh, and for those of you who i promised a jersey or other stuff too i'm sorry i flaked on it but i'm all packed and moved now. actually i still have a pile of components and tires and such at my old place; i'm going to have to put it at the curb soon. if anyone's interested in the lot of it i'll give you a heads up and i'll stash it somewhere if you want to pick it up before it goes...

if you're going to have silver components on the bike i'd say unpainted rims would be the nicest - have a look at the fusions and the aeroheads in the velocity line up as well... nice rims.

as far as colours go - i've had a few different coloured rims in the past blue... green... and i've always gone back to basics... right now i've got an all black wheelset, a black / ti grey wheelset and an silver wheelset... i do like the look of some colours but they have a tendency to get old kind of fast, y'dig?

if you do get coloured wheels and want to get super nerdy with it go black on the back and yellow on the front.

heya folks, new to the site and just poking around.. glad to see that there's a buncha fixie riders here in TO.

Hrm, I must have missed this (stupid-crazy busy lately), pm me your old address if you don't mind. I am building a bike up for a friend who is on a budget, so anything free is good ;)

Agreed :) I'd be glad to take used/old/crappy components down to bikechain rather than have them go out to the garbage.

That reminds me, since my recent move I've had an old messenger bag full of helmets, tires, parts that need to find a new home (preferably spread out to a number of different people). For something like that (I've got a Giro Metropolis helmet as well as a Giro Eclipse, an old Crumpler messenger bag, some handlebars and a few sets of tires, etc.) would Bike Chain be a more appropriate drop-off location or is this more something to bring to Bike Pirates?

Either/or.. Bike Chain only serves U of T students, whereas Bike Pirates is accessible to the whole cycling community.. it really depends on which community you're most interested in helping.

What kind of bag / how stinky is it? I've been making do with my crappy/small bag but it tends to bounce around at higher speeds.. I always thought about trying a crumpler but they were too pricy for me. I guess I'm a bit of a free-stuff venal or unscrupulous person (but my wife would call it the hoarding/packrat disease ;))

cavit8 06-04-08 07:13 AM

With all the free stuff floating around, if there's a crankset or drop bars in there anywhere, give me a shout.

Flimflam 06-04-08 07:50 AM
