:twitchy: though that does sound like a lot of fun.... hell even without a bike, sledging down there would be hella fun :p

Agreed, I'll try and be extra careful riding home tonight :)

Watch out tonight, with everyone coming back from the Bills game perhaps a little 'toasty'

I think I'd want a freewheel on the back and another brake for those hills :p That's just insane.

Sounds like I need to get my road bike out some more :D

the fastest in can remember going is 75 down the bayview extension on my road bike. i've been riding without a computer for a few years so i'm sure i break that all the time just getting around town...

does anyone know where to find cheapo chrome chainguards? would crappy tire sell something like that? i'd like to slap one on my winter bike so's i don't have to roll up my pants when it gets cold.

pyze-guy 12-07-08 06:01 PM

Stuart, excellent advice on the insoles. I noticed a huge difference on the ride home.

I grabbed exactly that at bikes on wheel at their late summer sale. 5$. Maybe they have more?

So true.
It's nothing new but boy the street car section on the road is freakin' slippery during snow falls.

Does anyone know if I can buy a new hub and assuming the spoke count is the same, lace it to a rim I'm currently using? I'm thinking of getting a powertap, but I want to have matching wheels. So I figured if I just used the same rim and same type of spokes I should be ok.... is that true?

jeremywhitehorn 12-07-08 08:45 PM

most mechanics i've asked about this say never re-use a rim but i'd ask our resident experts what they think...

If the rim is kosher and the old wheel is de-tensioned/etc properly, I don't see any big prob with it. Particularly if the rims are nice enough to save. Is this your HED rear wheel?

If you are gonna shell out the $$$$$ for a Powertap...whats $ more for a nice new rim? I wouldn't use the HED rim...spend the $100 or so and get a D.T. rim. You can re-use em but I usually refuse to build used rims for too many reasons to mention here.

Exciting ride in this morning. Apparently with only 12 hours of notice the weather network can't differentiate between "cloudy tommorow morning" and "snow everywhere tommorow morning"...

Kind of fun though ;)

1. It was/is snowing out this morning (you probably know that).
2. I can't stand snow flakes smacking me in the eyeballs when I'm riding.
3. I've lost two pairs of sunglasses to the bushes on various trails this season (no $ for another pair).
4. Faced with the prospect of commuting to/from work sans glasses, I surveyed the apartment, weighed my options and road to work wearing a pair of Sara's purple Jackie O. sunglasses.

Snow + no glasses of any sort = full suckage = road salt in the eye waiting to happen.
15 bones for yellows at the surplus store Jarvis/Queen in case of flying particulate matter desperation. I might check 'em out b/c I found the orange lenses a little dark this morning.
I had a cab shadow me too closely for several blocks on Queen E in the traffic, so I "took lane". Had to wipe lenses a couple times but pretty good over all. Knobbies for the traction win.

$4.00 for safety glasses at rotblotts ftw

shapelike 12-08-08 09:19 AM

Wheeerd, I'm all over that action after I finish work today.

exhibitx 12-08-08 10:13 AM

You can also get sunglasses from PBK for $20, they come with a hard case, soft case and 5 lenses

I don't use all 5 lenses, but I like having the yellow ones for at night

zippered 12-08-08 11:06 AM

yeah i have a $20 pair of interchangables too (which almost got smashed in the badness of last week) but this time of year i just use the cheap clear lenses all the time because i don't have to be as gentle with them. now that i have one of those face masks i'm having less trouble with foggy lenses in the cold.

Flimflam 12-08-08 12:26 PM

My current glasses are from nashbar, just some of their own brand that happened to be on sale. I have 3 sets of lenses for them but mostly use the red/orange tints.

My eyes were watering HARD last night even with wearing them, so I've no clue how bad it would've been without them.

This morning was fun, felt warmer than I'd imagined as I put on my wet gear so I was in sweatyhogsville when I got to the GO train station. The only part that felt the cold was the bridge of my nose/top cheeks - exactly where my glasses push the wind away into

The Bloor viaduct bike lanes are hosed, they were solidified slush/mud/crap last night and similar today it seemed. I just rode on the line/in the wheel path of the first lane until it was time to move over for Danforth, didn't seem to cause any car problems. Had a few back wheel slips under power, but otherwise just took it very gingerly - I even did a pedestrian crossing at Carlton/Parliament to avoid any track mishaps :p

cupcrazy4 12-08-08 01:34 PM

MEC's got some sweet glasses for $25, the model is 'espresso'. They sell interchangeable lenses in a bunch of different colours. They even look cool! Only problem is I've scratched my lenses too much...

TRaffic Jammer 12-08-08 02:34 PM

Apparently, from a bud at work, the Lakeshore bike path North was..... salted. Good god might the city be cluing in or was it an accident with a salter? Which counselors are on the cycling committee? I'd love to find out if this represents a shift in how winter cycling is to be handled in our fair metropolis. Could we be so lucky?

I'd be pleased if they dragged a heavy skid along the path to crush the snow into hardpack/trail. I'd ride that sh*t everyday to work in the winter.

I_bRAD 12-08-08 02:41 PM

I could do without salt myself. plowing would be nice.

TRaffic Jammer 12-08-08 02:44 PM

Well yea in a perfect situation, but we're not getting away from that here in this city. If it was in the North they'd be sanding.
With the plows doing the 8cm thing no salt would cause chaos every time the snow fell. Who knows we might get they legislate snow tires for everyone like they did in Québec this year. Although it has caused a shortage of snow tires all over the place.

Mac wizs!!! Anyone know of a utility that will identify bad sectors on the HD and block them off from read/write access.
I know Windows utilities will do this. I have a spot on my HD that hates being read from though seemingly has no issues being written to. I know it's a small area of drive I'd love to be able to virtually "fence off" in the mind of the OS.

Thank-you , that is all
