i just rode the "long way" home along the lakeshore to the humber bridge, and it is indeed freshly plowed... and salted. now we know why the bollards were taken down!

i love how cyclists acknowledge each other more in the winter. i also love how it feels to have just the right layers on to be booting along in the cold (that everyone else is hiding in steel cages from) but feel totally comfortable. *smiley face behind a mask*

ps. cupcrazy: i don't think it's you, i think it's the glasses. i thought i was being careless until i bought a replacement set for the mec frames and then realised that they scratch really easily.

pfft. I liked having a nice peaceful snowy trail all to myself to ride on. Now that the city cares about cyclists we get to ride through the same salt and black slush as the car drivers do!

True enough. Sudo is just a way of executing commands in UNIX when they require a higher privilege level than your user context. For example, sudo rm -rf /* will make magic happen to your computer (by magic, I mean its equivalent to telling the root user to delete everything in your filesystem). If you want to determine if the drive truly has bad sectors, then try to boot the machine in a PC with drive manufacturer tools (PowerMAX, Seatools, etc.) and perform a full scan.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, it was gnarly out today but it was so beautiful I love those big slow-falling flakes. I did have to yell at one jackass to quit coming so close to me but that was about it, which is a big surprise, usually Queen is full of nutjobs in cars.

I found some clear-shield sunglasses at MEC for about $20 and they are pretty much a necessity for me in the winter.

I have a great pair of Ryder shades that I was using before my Nashbar ones, only now I scratched the heck out of the red lens after Jetfuels' booze-up in April. The right side, directly in my eye sight-line is all foobared on my dark lens for them too, so I retired them as I don't like the clear lens much (too much lens flare for me).

Interesting news re: the Martin Goodman trail - I wonder if they're going to plow the on-street bike lanes as well, because I'll be damned if I'm riding on that **** if it's all caked up. It's also interesting given that I thought the city was operating on a reduced plowing budget - or was that just for last season?

Mmmm, nice gucky ride today, my rain pants and mec booties are naaaasty looking right now. Only tricky part today was Bloor viaduct this morning, still kindof frozen ruts from Sunday.

I'm really liking the winter marathons so far. I'll do up a proper review once I get some miles on them.

Are you using the yellow cycling insoles, or the red 'winter wear' ones? I'm going to try the pork chop variety first, but the superfeet(s..?) look pretty cool.

Yeah I'm sure glad I noticed it actually snowed/snowing before I left - I was otherwise thinking "hmm, warmer today - nice!". Glad I donned my booties/rainpants - the "showers" I got from passing cars and buses made it all the more worth while.

Was pretty sweaty when I got up to Steeles, but that's just a matter of being overdressed (I stupidly left my thermal leggings on). Had to take off my balaclava by the time I got to Davenport, and my glasses got too wet/messy once I was around Wilson, so I took those off too - thank dog for my helmet visor, which does a great job of keeping the crap out of my eyes.

Had a good ride up, some sidestreet fun as well as the main haul up Keele - which was pretty decent, folks gave me room where I needed and there was no issue.

Once I got north of Lawrence it started snowing much heavier, fairly big flakes that were immediately sticking... If nothing else, it'll be an entertaining ride home if the [supposed] rain doesn't wash it away.

I was just asked "You have snow tires on your bike? How about chains? Depends where you live I guess" so I answered "No, no and Queen & Roncesvalles" to which she replied "Oh my GOD!". So I just said "this stuff makes it fun, the cars... not so much, but the snow is lots of fun :)".

dang, today's cam footage bllllllooooows. Angle that **** up Andrew.

That reminds me, I should mount the camera again for some snow rides. Not used mine in ages.

Either of these will do a surface scan, but I don't know about remapping. If either comes up with errors, try to RMA the drive if its under warranty, because bad sectors tend to propagate as time goes on. What I mentioned earlier is endemic to most diagnostic software: it only runs under windows or DOS. Hard drive manufacturers produce tools which can be used to scan and repair their drives, as well as perform low-level formats. The problem is all these bits of software run on DOS; hence, you typically have to transplant the hard drive from a mac into a PC which can boot into DOS.

Damn it's the HD for my MacBookPro, so there will be no moving it over to a PC.
Sh*t and Bother, Apple Care to the rescue.... on my second drive, speaker on the right is blown. The case is warped somewhat as well but nothing I do for that. Heck even Windows will identify bad sectors. MACs have been typically lackluster in the drive maintenance arena.

Good God DOS? That simply won't do in this day and age. We like bikes BTW!!!
