Rent a car, go down to Buffalo and buy one there. I saw them on Performance's site for like $199.
And I'm willing to spend $300 here, after investing what I did in my bike haha, but the only place I've found them for sale so far is la Bicletta and they want $399! thanks! |
oh man a thread in the main forum just made me work out how long since i have worn "normal shoes" (instead of riding shoes, or craptacular crocs)
its been 2 weeks since i wore dress shoes, and just over 3 months since converse shoes... shows how comfy sidi's are :D |
You were wearing Converse Chucks at the staff party last Sunday! Weren'tcha? Sillypants.
Um... I am spying on you? |
i sometimes like riding in cycling shoes, but i can't imagine wearing them all day in non-cycling situations...
|
thought i had a spare left side crank arm but i couldn't find one. had trouble getting the remaining nub of the snapped one off so now i'm riding my non-winter bike with an old wheelset for the winter...

They are great tires but expensive. The Haka 106 studded comes in 700x35c and they are $125 cheaper per tire. The Haka 240 comes in a 40c and is about $50 cheaper. Are these for trail riding or commuting?
|
Can't say in all the years I've been commuting that studs would have been useful at all except in a couple of instances on our roads.
|
Well, I was planning on just running the knobbies for a while to see how I do. I'm just trying to cross my eyes and dot my tees.
|
I took my GT Karoakoram down to NZ in a cardboard bike box and it was fine. When I returned, I packed it up in a similar box that my LBS down there gave me. I don't think anyone would rent a case for 6 months, would they?
Also, if you are in Auckland you probably won't want to be fixed as it is hillier than San Fransisco. And if you think Toronto drivers suck, I have some bad news for you.....:( |
Thanks for the help guys, I ended up getting one used from a shop in Windsor my uncle frequents.
I need the hard-case style because I'm doing a field course with my university and will be travelling by bus for 6 weeks on the 2nd part of my trip, and will be staying in places for 3-4 days. So I'll build the bike up whenever I feel like it, and be able to keep it safe on the bus while traveling. Definetly not riding fixed, taking my Surly LHT. 6 weeks studying at a university in Dunedin(south island), awesome trail/rail-bed system and velodrome, 6 weeks across both islands on a bus, 8 weeks on my bike going wherever I want. Mad stoked. |
quite possibly the most awesome ride tonight
even got a 2 wheel drift going, before i swiftly unclipped and slammed into the curb :D |
yes that was both incredably fun and terrifying
my entire front brake was encased in ice |
the snow was still flying when i left work after midnight and it's still falling now (at 3 am) so it was a bit of a white-knuckle ride for a while. it's amazing how fast you get your "winter legs" back though. it took me about 20 minutes of riding to feel comfortable again in the snow.
if the snow is still falling in the morning though, it may be subway-time... |
I rode back from Victoria Park/Eglinton last night around 11 and it took me a good 2 hours to get home. Lots of already-frozen bumps making ruts and other such difficult stuff.
Was fun, but really time consuming - I'm TTCing today, really don't want to deal with the conditions and drivers going to Keele/Steeles today... Boo-urns. :( |
Whhhhaaaawhhooooooo DAYM That was fun gettin' to work!!!! I only wish there was more snow ala sidestreets on the mains.
|
more of the same on friday and then again on sunday
|
The mains were not bad at all. I love this stuff....and for the most part cars give you much more space and go a more reasonable speed. Well except for the ass-clown who just HAD to get past me and accelerated at a rate much too high for the conditions. As he raced past me..yelling at me into his closed window...I guess he didn't notice traffic had stopped and he plowed into the car ahead of him. I stuck around long enough to explain to the idiot that in snowy conditions he should slow down and be more patient....I got an angry "FU(k-You!" for my trouble. Fortunately I had watched this little gem before I left the house this morning and was in too good a mood to let anyone/thing bother me...enjoy!

Haha he got what he deserved.
Just before the work place I have to go trough a side street: basically two little hills, narrow, not plowed (save for two tire tracks) and a fair amount of traffic. I have to go slow in the descent (obviously), and the cars were quite patient, going slowly behind. I felt nice and went on the side to let them pass. Well that was the mistake because I fell (quite gently though). From now on the ROAD IS MINE :p |
Oh and do I have the worst handling skills? Everytime I ride on loosely packed snow, it seems I slowly drift to the right and I'm basically unable to come back without shaking and fearing I'll fall. Perhaps it's my tires (slicks 2"/1" front/rear).
