Perhaps simply a wider shoulder everywhere, and educating motorists to SHARE THE LANE, and to merge onto the now-wider shoulder when turning to avoid the right hook.

Absolutely. I'd be alot happier if they scrapped the idea of bike lanes entirely and just focused on getting motorists up to speed with the educational side of things.

Or if they just dug up portland and airlifted it on top of Toronto. That'd work for me too.

Yeah it seems bike lanes are a quick & easy way to say "we're bike-friendly". They create a false sense of security (i.e. right hook), basically dump cyclists out of the way of traffic, and also provide a nice place for cars to park/idle in rush hour.

Even in Portland only 4.4% of people commute by bike (see fixedude's post). I admit their bike lanes look nicely designed. Perhaps 5% is the best we can do in NA?

Quick and easy? Not in Toronto.

I know I asked before but I haven't the energy to search. 26inch MTB tires. Who makes the skinniest knobbies for such a rim? Keeping in mind a MTB to monster-cross conversion... as it were. Ah hell, just call it faster knobbies..

The issue with bike lanes too is it reinforces the perception that bikes belong crammed way into the gutter and are in no circumstances allowed in the actual laneway. As a result you end up taking **** from drivers who think you're breaking the law and being reckless by taking the lane when you have to. FFS I've had someone pass me in the oncoming traffic lane because I was in the middle of the road trying to make a left. Not only did the dip**** almost kill me but he screams at me to get in the bike lane as he passes. The perception that bikes belong exclusively in lane-ghettos at the side of the road is ten times more harmful than the possibility that someone is just going to randomly run you down from behind.

Personally I'm of the opinion that bikelanes are more harmful to cyclists than anything. If (as someone mentioned) they just put up signs that said "Cyclists allowed to use entire lane" on every street it would do more good than having a bikelane on every single laneway in the downtown core.

I was out for a smoke and watched as ICS van pulls into the bike lane, pushing all the plowed snow from the edge into the BL. He pops out ... mounts his two parking tickets under the wiper then goes to make a delivery. Thing is around the corner at the front of the building is a special parking area for about 4 couriers. Add to that the two people parked in the BL, one on the phone, one getting his dry cleaning. I just wanted to scratch paint, what is it about a sign that says NO STOPPING that makes it invalid if it refers to a BL to these jokers? I, in a dream, wanna slam into the back of one and go through the back window just to prove a point, or scrape bar across the driver's side. Not that I ever would mind you ... but I'd love to

^^ yup. There's bike lanes for you. Then on the other hand why would you expect more when cyclists are such a small minority. It's a non-issue for most of the population unfortunately.


I have some more recent data for cycle commuter % in the US. The highest is in Davis, CA at 14%... the average is 4.5% for the 50 best cities... How it is in Canada I wonder.

I wanted those bars too for my winter bike, but I took cheap 10$ north roads instead. They are really upright and comfy Nice to look ahead but terrible to pedal out of the saddle.
