BoW had a surly 18t when I was in the other day. He was telling me that he loaded up on track/fg parts for the year, so they'd probably have a 20t.

Biggest difference would be the geometry. Fisher has it's G2 geometry, otherwise they're going to be similar component specs on similar price points. eg Bontrager wheelset, stem, seatpost, handlebars etc.

So seeing how I have been such a good boy this year I figured it was ok to order in my cross bike for next year. Kona Major Jake. Swapping out everything stock for Ultegra SL and white DT Mon Chasseral wheels w/ Racing Ralph tires...Paul brakes...carbon bar and stem. It becomes really easy to go nuts when you get 20% off wholesale for everything. I love working in a bike shop.

****, I finally got some winter cycling boots. Shimano Winter MTBs. SH-W80 or something. Those + Smartwool == winning winter life.
Does anyone want some Shimano WH-R561 wheels + skewers? The front is slightly out of true and the rear is perfect. They came stock on my CAAD9 and I never used them much.

The JTS isn't Scandium.....it is butted 7005. It is a great all arounder but if you want to do real mtn. biking you would be better served with a dedicated mtn. bike. The frame would likely take any punishment you could dole out and Kona is very good with warranty if something happens (very unlikely in my experience w/ Kona and I have owned 5 different ones in the last 5 years) If you decide to go the mtn route stop by the shop and I will get you a deal on something.

I love the Scandium. I have 2 Kona Kula Scandium 29er frames and they have been awesome. This is what made me go for the Major as opposed to the regular JTS. Also I am sure riding in the Don on a cross bike would not void any warranty....it is a cross bike after all. I am only in the shop on Monday then off for the rest of the week....heading up north for New Year/B-Day Hi-Jinks. Liquor and Guns! YEE-HAW!!

Sounds awesome! That's going to be a seriously light ride, even for a big'un like yourself.

Keith... Just a question, how big is your stable of bikes? I know if I got 20% off wholesale on bikes I would own too many for my own good
How much does a decent cross bike weigh?

A mid-high end cross bike comes in around the 19-20lb mark off the peg. I am hoping to get mine down to about 17 and change.

I paid about that: $235. FWIW, rode over to Lawrence square after buying the boots, and the skies opened up. In that downpour, my feet were dry. Took another ride last night and went along Unwin, behind a dump truck full of snow. Unwin was one giant puddle that I rode through, and my feet remained dry. They are really worth it because they seem to work! I will have to report back once the temps plunge, because I didn't examine the insoles very carefully; hence, I don't know if they are insulated.
Is there a mountain bike riding workshop? I'm more than a beginner, but not that skilled when I'm riding off road. I was thinking that I know there are some training sessions /lessons for cyclocross, and I wondered if there would be something similar for mountain biking.
