They need all fixed gear parts and bikes to come with a sticker or something that indicates how easy it is to mangle a finger between chain and cog/ring. I caught my finger turning the ring really slow the first time I was lubing my drive train and learnt my lesson right there the easy way. Hurt like hell but at least everything was still attached.

That really sucks, t-dot. I wonder if they've seen other people injure themselves in the same way?

Question for the MTB'ing crowd: I might forgo a cyclocross frameset in favor of an MTB, but it would involve buying a whole new bike. I haven't done any MTB stuff since 2005, so what on earth is decent right now? Can a reasonable bike be had for <$1k? I was looking at a Cannondale F4, but there have to be other options out there.

ha ha ha ya guys i shoulda asked the ER triage woman about it!! they couldn't believe it happened with a bicycle... they thought i was talking about a motorcycle at first... try explaining bleeding for the love of bicycles to some middle aged overweight angry woman, and you'll quickly discover how crazy we really are ha ha!!!

on the bright side, my build is almost finished... just some finishing touches to go!! Stuff like pedals and clips and maybe some new drops... should i keep my original refurbed miche pedals or go mks??

I admit I am out of the loop when it comes to mtbs, which is funny as I have 6 of them in various states right now. And since the one that will be used in the trails will be a rigid s/s, I'm of even less help.

i've had it with all this snow! i rode to work today and in the 12 hours i was there we probably got a foot of snow so i wussed out at took the subway home. not even bloor street had decent tire-ruts to ride in for traction. i was hoping for one of those really cold dry winters...

I went out at around 2/3pm and it had just started, came home around 10:30 and it was mostly pretty decent - slower going, but the warmth had made everything softer so I could just roll through it.

I would steer away from Cannondale, but that's just my opinion. They have alot of proprietary parts that you might have a headache replacing or upgrading in the future. I know their steer tubes are a weird size, and I think they also have their own chainring spacings. For a K you could get a nice hardtail, drop another $300 and you can get a nice 29er. Don't bother grabbing a dually for that money, if you want to go rear suspension I'd recommend you drop at least $15-1800. Giant usually has really good pricing for what you are getting on their bikes.

Yeah, it was certainly fun riding in 12" puddles and getting spashed head to toe by passing cars. At least it isn't cold out there. On the plus side my Mec rain booties certainly paid for themself today.

I think the only proprietary thing on the F4 is its headtube, and I looked into it: Cannondale makes a down-sizing adapter for standard MTB forks. I actually used to have a Giant Iguana, but it was a heavy mofo. Way back then, the XTC was a fairly expensive model, but it looks like they now make various levels of XTC build. Might check out an XTC 2 or 1.

Apparently, the Cannondale is built so that you can throw 700c wheels on it if desired, but that headshock fork looks like a service nightmare.

Another company I just remembered is Gary Fisher. I wonder if there's anything about those frames to distinguish from Trek...

who makes fixed cogs in larger sizes (other than the obvious eai or phils which are $50 and more)? i want to get either a 19 or 20t for my winter bike. i though the miche ones came in larger sizes but i can't find anything on the web.

Rode up to the east end last night and it was pretty swampy in places... One stretch on O'Connor was BB-level deep, my booties indeed were welcome - the sound of them 'paddling' through was weird/cool.

I know cyclesolutions on Parlament has surly 18t for sure. La carrera sells miche cogs. Dingles, try Curbside, some some there last week.

you don't happen to remember the price? i like the dingle because they have a 17/21t version. great if you get caught in a snow storm.
