Can't believe I've managed to convince him to consider the ride at all. ("What? a 6 hour ride without a support vehicle?!?")

lmao. I'm almost cheesy enough to consider it, but not on my salary. Plus we've been married too long for that crap.

Hmm, good info there...looks like that won't be the route we'll take. I'd rather have hilly and less windy than windy and less hilly.

Thanks guys :)

if you want a copy of the route, email Owen Rogers at the TBN. He is the organiser of the hairshirt and he usually has paper copies available. as for road conditions, i can't remember them being anything out of the ordinary. you get the odd beat-up country road out in the sticks but for the most part its smooth going. you can't have fresh pavement the whole way no matter where you go. as for your comment about lack of support, i wouldn't worry too much as there are facilities just about everywhere along the route for food/water/washrooms. there are some stretches of 20km or where there is nothing (on the way to welland port and from welland to niagara falls) but you're never too far from what you need.

well i want to but i'm not in any kind of shape; i usually have a century or two and a 200km brevet under my belt by this time. i haven't done any kind of long distance riding this year. i suppose if a group was interested in doing it i'd go and just try to ride tempo and survive.

operator 05-18-06 08:55 AM

Oh. 200km brevet? Nuts! I was riding back last year and these guys were just flying, 40kph. They motioned for me to jump on the back and I did. Asked them a bit later what was happening and they said they were just finishing up a double metric.

looks like a 7005 taiwanese aluminum job. but geez for $40US? does it come with the fork? depending on shipping costs, it could be a deal. i'm tempted to pick one up for that price.

somnambulant 05-18-06 09:35 AM

is this top 10 albums of all time? or just top 10 recently? because those could be fairly different lists. :)

cavernmech: you going to Gigantour this summer to see Megadeth? I went last year on my bday. :D I don't think they've announced the lineup for this year yet. awesome list, btw. :)

jeremey: dah.. why the heck won't godspeed tour again?! I saw them a few years ago and I've been desperate to see them again ever since.

operator 05-18-06 09:44 AM

No, fork is like $30 extra. Here's the page, they have lots of goodies. I emailed them about how much/and what shipper they use to Canada but they haven't responded yet (site says they're closed till the 29th).

www.chucksbikes.com

They're supposedly reputable from other bf'ers posts.

somnambulant 05-18-06 09:47 AM

Here are some recent fav's, in no particular order:

1) Isis - can't get enough of their entire discography right now
2) Propaghandi - I'd Rather Be Flag Burning
3) Fugazi - The Argument
4) Mogwai - Mogwai EP
5) Buck 65 - Talkin ***** Blues
6) Death By Stereo - Death For Life
7) Pixies - Trompe Le Monde
8) Killing The Dream - In Place Apart
9) Converge - Jane Doe
10) Autechre - Amber

This is a good guage of my music as well, although it often doesn't update my ipod listening habits properly (it keeps missing things.. I *know* I've listened to Isis a lot more than it's reporting): http://www.last.fm/user/somnambulant/

yeah, i saw GSYBE a few years ago at the opera house (2001 i think). such a quiet show but really different from the norm; that's why i like them.

gokiburi 05-18-06 09:50 AM

Yeah...that Johnny Cash record is fantastic. You can kind if feel in his singing he was going to pass away shortly there after. His version of "Hurt" is particularly good.

TRaffic Jammer 05-18-06 10:25 AM

Yea you totally knew he was passing the torch as it were, you can feel it in his voice. One of the most powerful albums I've ever listened to ever. Even to the track listing. It is his swan song but it's like he literally died on the recording, he put everything into it as he KNEW it was his last. RIP

operator 05-18-06 10:28 AM

Cascada - Everytime we touch
4 Strings - Believe
Angel City - Love me right
Evanescence - The Fallen
Radiohead - Ok Computer
Linkin Park - The Theory

FLAC ftw.

I've ordered from them a few times. Good prices. I had them ship USPS and the cost was always reasonable (a frame may be worse though).

hey op, about ordering online. even if shipping is cheap, you should figure in any possible duties/taxes and tack that on. also weigh that against going to a local shop and getting it right away so you can ride right away. i mean, you can't really put a dollar value on being able to slap it on and ride! i understand your point about being far from stores and being able to check out stuff online though.. BUT, you're downtown quite a lot, so why not pick up stuff when it's convenient?

sweep242 05-18-06 10:53 AM

In random order. Not all time just what i'm listening to now
1.le tigre - this island
2.the gossip - standing in the way
3.the von bodies - pawn shop heart
4.the lawrence arms oh calcutta
5.alkaline trio - all
6.dwarves - dwarves must die
7.les georges leningrad -sur les traces
8.the suicide machines - war profiteering
9.screeching weasel - all
10.felix the housecat - devin dazzle & the

a short list
Cheers

operator 05-18-06 10:58 AM

Yeah, I don't really have any interest in building up that specific frame above, just purely a get it because it's cheap type thing :D You know in case I break my frame mid ride and need to swap it out.

The big problem i've found mainly is that none of the shops really carry exactly what I want (read: obscure) and when they do it's a special order (might as well order it myself) and not necessarily cheaper than I can order it even after tax/handling/duty (if any).

I hate calling around every shop and asking if they carry this that blah blah and 90% of the time they come back and go sorry don't have. :(

For example no one has these: http://www.profile-design.com/2006_p.../quickstop.jpg
