the "waterloo mech" part is unneccessary I think. All engineering departments everywhere do a whole lot of drinking. I know they certainly had a name for themselves at my university (Memorial) and I had several friends go through the program and tell me stories. Total craziness.

This is why it is better to wait a couple of years *before* going to university-especially if you are considering any form of engineering. No way would I have let some pack of hair lipped fools dye me purple, then have me eat marshmallows that some dude had previously wedged in his sweaty butt crack. Amazing what a couple of years of life experience can do to your perspective.

I see nothing wrong with youthful hijinxs at that stage in life. it's the only opportunity you have to act that way. you try that later on in life and you end up the guy whose family doesn't talk to him.

The prevailing attitude around here (or at least in my immediate surrounding family) is that the faster you get into university, the faster you graduate, and the faster you start making some real money. As such, any suggestions or hints of year off or time off is met with extreme prejudice.

Absolutely ..... typical of boomer generational thinking. The company will gladly burn you to a fraction of who you once were in the name of profits. Then ditch you and replace you with a new graduate who will work for relative peanuts. It's cheaper than training and retraining you. I discovered this when almost done my schooling and I basically gave up on coding. Unless of course you are that "special" geek that can code your own apps and create your own software niche/company.

I think with the price of post secondary, and how fast we are all expected to live and produce, some time off to make sure your studies are what you "really" want to do it actually the smart thing to do. Better chance of getting ROI that way. IMHO.

I know of waaaaay too many friends with degrees they don't use. I know of a Masters in Eco-toxicology...now a photographer. Go figure.

I'm way more mature after university than I was before, although its hard to tell whether it was university or being left to fend for myself after my parents moved to Europe that did it. I drink in moderation (moderately) and I'm a huge safety nerd. I'm always telling my girlfriend and friends and strangers that what they are doing is unsafe and that they shuld remedy it. This is coming from the guy who decided to play soccer on avenue road just north of queens park after century club. We uprooted trees from the club monaco and used them as goal posts.

I think my problem with the engineering phenomenon is that its such a group thing... you're just being initiated into some weird nerdy club that defends itself by saying they drink alot. When I was in first year we did it the old fashioned way... we met people and made friends with them and then went out and got loaded... none of this dye-yourself-purple-and-get-drunk-with-other-engineers-because-everyone-else-is-doing-it crap. And nbow that grade 13 is done I bet all the drinking events are going to be phased out. So hooray for engineers, you get to parade around like a pack of fools with a hard hat chained to your belt while all the artsies make fun of you and then hang out with all the hot chicks. Maybe I'm just a jaded artsy though...

PS. I'm thinking of getting an 06 khs flite 100 from europe bound ($540). Anyone have anything good or bad to say about it? pedals, saddle and wheels would be swapped right away (my girlfriend could make use of the wheels). The stock components are pretty much generic alloy, and the truvativ crqanks look like they could be a bit dicey, but nevertheless better than my poor old fuji which has started to try to kill me on a regular basis.

Keith, do you have any road or track frames in the 58-60cm range? I pretty much need to replace the frame/fork/headset/bb/cranks on my commuter, which makes me think an off-the-shelf bike may not be that much more in the end.

I find the artsy ones are also a bit more socially capable than the geeks (don't flame...it's true and you know it) It might be an attempt at giving some desperately needed air of "cool"? Mass groupings of mindless behavior has always turned me off completely.
