damn the both of yous!

and yeah, I need to get some fenders. I bought some at MEC a month or so ago, but they didn't fit -- not enough clearance. Urbane told me they had some that fit though, but I haven't gotten around to dropping by there yet.

ps. as I'm writing this it started to snow fairly heavily.

I've got slicks on, and it's OK for this kind of stuff. Usually in January I switch to some small CX knobbies for a bit more snow traction. Still, slicks are fine for amost anything.

I'm running some big full coverage fenders at the moment, but I haven't switched from my slicks to winter tires yet... I probably should soon though, its just that I haven't decided whether to use last years 'alright' winter tires, or splurge and get some nice cross tires to keep me rubber down as much as possible. Anyone know a store with a nice selection of cross tires (700cc)? MEC and urbane always seem to let me down on that front.

EDIT: also I may be going to see that film on friday

dukes on queen has some nice cross tires with a variety of tread patterns (pricey though, like $80 and up per tire)...... but nice.
are you still riding your spicer Shiznaz?

bike movie, friday, I'm there (just gotta remember)

Ever had one of those days where no matter which direction you ride in the wind shifts and blows in your face? Ya, that's today. Don't sweat not riding ... it was fun to play in the snow but I felt like I was biking through sand all day.

I usually end up getting my CX tires on the internet. Never seen a toronto shop with reasonable pricing. Ritchey speedmax are good on pavement, if you can find them.

What the hell.

- sydney's dead from an idiot driver.
- My gf was hosting a poker party at her work and one of the guys there got the call that his family had just been killed in a car crash.
- I got smacked by two cars in one night ("Do you want an ambulance?" "No, I want her ****ing plates.")

Here's me not touching the ****ing streets this time next year. Black Friday indeed.

eyefloat, that's some brutal news. at least you're ok.. the bike can be replaced. i bumped into cam (cavit8) in kensington saturday afternoon and he says he's stopped commuting due to some looney drivers. wasn't there something crazy like 300 fender benders on the highways after that first significant snowfall??!
sorry but, who's sydney? (i apologize if i'm being insensitive..)

ugh. It's sad when it gets bad enough for people who (I understand) are dedicated cycle-commuters to throw up their hands and give up.

I haven't gotten to that point yet I don't think, but I'm definitely riding a LOT more defensively and also avoiding my Summer route (straight along Bloor) and taking more side-streets. Not that they're safe necessarily, but at least traffic is slower. I actually consider Harbord to be a bit of a death-trap, so it doesn't always work out.

I was in Kensington on Saturday afternoon as well... I just passed through for some coffee while taking my Dad (who was passing through Toronto overnight on his way to a job in Trinidad) for a walk through downtown.

$hitty guys. Be careful out there, it is getting pretty stupid. I've had a few close calls lately, like this morning some mouthbreathing cager decides it would be funny to unload passengers in the middle of the road. The passenger throws his door wide open right in front of me-it was way too close. I managed to stop, but I didn't have anywhere else to go-lamp post stopped me from hopping the curb, or bailing out. If I had been 10 ft further ahead when the door opened, I probably would be in a world of hurt right now. Makes me want to carry a baseball bat under my top tube.

sydney's a guy who posted something like 14 000 messages over on the bike mechanics forum. He posted about the same amount over on the bicycling.com forums as well. He was one of those miserable bastards who knew everything there is to know about bikes. People had to suffer to get the info, but he'd help anyone out with their problems. He was killed Friday after a kid who was text-messaging on his phone while driving went into the bike lane and hit him.

Edit: Got my spell on.

I don't know where you were riding, but the Mass that night was great, actually, except for one guy on Spadina who got uppity and nearly clipped three of us.

Sucks about sydney. Stuff like that only reinforces the need to ensure equivalent treatment and respect on the roads.

I was social yesterday morning and chatted with another fixie rider during my commute. He was a messenger looking guy riding a brakeless bright green frame. Seemed like a nice guy! I can't remember his name though.. he had an Eastern European sounding accent.

We were chatting about the velodrome in London -- I still want to get out there sometime to make an ass of myself.
