ohayo (or konnichiwa, depending on when y'all wake up)! akema*****e omedetou! i had a great time back in hogtown, but didn't get to ride as much as i would've liked with all the rain(!)...and when the weather cooperated, i was either out-of-town or with non-cyclists. oh well, nothing like lugging my bike case around the world...at least i was able to pick up some nice gear from 'wheels of bloor' (if you go, tell peter the dude from japan sent you). i was also able to satisfy some of my gastronomical cravings, including jet fuel, clafouti, terroni, saving grace, creemore beer, brar sweets, papa ceo's, etc...geez, i even stopped in at sanko for some onigiri, complete with nori, and green tea (highly recommended, btw!)...if only they also had the convenient hard-boiled eggs.

i also met up with gokiburi (who ended up helping me with some arts'n'crafty present-making. gokiburi-san, domo arigato gozaima*****a!!) for coffee, an alley walk(!) and a tour of his office. while i got to check out and ride his sannino, he only got to see my two feet. and after a wet vacation at home, i have returned to japan, where the local temperature today was 15C and i was just rocked by tremors of an earthquake.

otherwise, nothing much else to report. maybe i'll see some of you in 1.5-2 years when i return again! or give a holler if you come to japan.

p.s. gokiburi> check out the pic...is this the bike you saw with the tennis balls? the pic is of one of the cats i met at kyotoloco.

p.p.s. cavernmech> i think you might know d.proffit over at 'the mess'? if so, please say "hi" from 323, if you ever see him!

I've got a new 49T Sugino 75 (144BCD) chainring on the way that I won't be using.

Q: Anyone have a comparible 48T chainring they're willing to trade?

Hey just found your post on the video thread. Still we ride. Can’t wait to watch it d/l'ing now.
Also no frame yet looks like early next week?! So no parts to trade but my (i’m watching) list is maxed at 30!
Thanks
Cheers

*out of the blue*

I think this spring once it warms up a bit we should have a day of grass track racing. It'd be a good chance for everyone to come out and take part in something they're absolutely horrible at (unless we have a ringer in town). Then, I believe drinks (rootbeer in sr's case) should be in order.

sr20det 01-14-06 09:59 PM

gingerbeer is better!
If spring is in 3 weeks or more, I'll be able to make it.
need to finish my exams and make it into uni next yet.

Further to the cyclops track bike that was mentioned a bit ago, I've been in correspondence with the maker's son and he's got a few frames for sale. This is the one I was speaking with him about (a 58 cm). My circumstances have changed such that it's unlikely I'll have any cash for this. If you're interested, I can put you in touch with him. He apparently has some other sizes but he hasn't got back to me with what they are.

Hrm, that is really nice and my size. It is un-used? What is the rear spacing? Do you think you could PM me the price that is being asked for it? Thanks.

somnambulant 01-16-06 07:56 AM

s-s-s-so c-c-c-cold.

I really need a proper set of winter riding gloves. I'm just wearing a pair of fleece gloves right now, and they don't help a whole lot. Ze goggles! Zey do nussing! My gf bought me a pair at Bikes on Wheels for xmas, but they were too small.. brought them back and they didn't have any larger sizes. d'oh! Now I have store credit and have to wait for them to get more.. Or I could just use the money towards that Soma coffee holder. ;)

Shiznaz 01-16-06 10:55 AM

I use the MEC espresso sunglasses with clear lenses for all my winter/night/crap biking. They are a great price and the spare lenses are so cheap you can abuse the hell out of them and then just get a replacement. And there is nothing as slick as wraparounds.

holy sheeit.. GOOD CALL fdude. that's the bike. small world eh??!! jeeez.. you've got a sharp eye. btw, i never did make it out to wakayama (buddy cancelled). i was as fruitful with bikes in japan as you were in toronto. oh well, one's enough for me! tokyo must've been 15C when i left and -9C in toronto when i got back. man, work sucks.. riding into work this morning was nice though.

Hey all. I just talked to Greg, the guy with all the old road frames. He is gonna bring a batch by on Tuesday of next week. Get em while they are hot. LOL.

darkmother 01-18-06 02:23 PM

I like those apollos. Used to have a 63, until I broke the rear triangle. It was a love machine-long top tube. What'dya want for it?

jeremywhitehorn 01-18-06 02:28 PM

Hi all, i'm sort of a newbie to this forum, not to fixed riding though. i've read some of the posts and read about you guys raving about thos chinese buns. where do you buy them? better yet, who'd be into cruising around, talking fixes and eatng some buns?

operator 01-18-06 03:08 PM

Currently too cold/dangerous for me to fly down yonge st. on my bike.

somnambulant 01-18-06 03:51 PM

*trying desperately to not take the buns comment and run with it*

Actually, if the weather's nice this weekend I wouldn't mind getting together for some buns and some coffee. Anyone else interested?

I fully disagree. :)

jeremywhitehorn-

"kim moon" bakery north side on Dundas just east of Spadina is one of my fave bun spots, I don't know the exact address. A 10 minute walk from work means I'm in there about twice a week, I can get an assortment of about 6 buns for like $1.50.

loving the black bean crisps lately.... solid protien, and at 50cents its cheaper than a powerbar.

go vegan 01-18-06 04:47 PM

I'll be there when they build Velo-City!

yung sing pastry is at 22 baldwin.. mmm, nice buns.. and tasty dim sum. all takeout. furama is on the west side of spadina, south of dundas. i don't think it's as good as kim moon or yung sing, but they do have good hk-style drinks there.

Yeah....he's bringing 6 frames to start.....from 52 to 60 cm. Some are just frame/fork....some have various parts on em eg:bar/stem, seat/post, cranks etc. I am always here till 6 during the week......sometimes later if there is beer in the shop :)

PM me to let me know what would work for you. I'm doing some work this weekend, but will be around most evenings and probably late Sunday. A couple of good ales would be preferable to a 12 pack :D
