oh my..I would have thought...if I'd ever asked my brain to go down this road, that you'd be in a chef's hat.

jeremywhitehorn 04-18-07 11:19 AM

sorry i won't be able to make the bbq on the weekend as i will of course be cooking food for grumpy ungrateful strangers. actually, we cooked for some of the guys from broken social scene last weekend apparently. couldn't tell you what they ate though.

make sure you take some pictures...oh wait.

in relation to the BBQ, we should at some point in the warm future be like a bangladeshi family and gather as many riders as we can to go out to the island or other park with a bag of charcoal and a cooler full of meat for a giant public bbq. Also beer. I've always been jealous of those giant park parties and have on occasion been tempted to mooch some food off of them.

When I used to walk the dog I'd always have to be careful to spot these parties well in advance, because my dog would charge towards them full speed, generally making everyone scatter in a panic, and then he would steal some food and everyone would get so furious at me I swore I was going to be killed! Total vibe killer!

One time he sauntered up behind a little muslim girl with an ice cream cone, who then turned around and shrieked while my dog took off the top of her cone in one messy bite. Mother and father started screaming at me so there were 3 different people screaming at once! I didn't really know what to do so I just pushed 5 bucks at the guy and ran off with the dog! Darn greedy labradors!

To be the Devil's Advocate here....most folks from Asia don't EVER see dogs as pets. It's a trip for them, as they are dirty, filthy scavenging mongrels on the streets, never to be allowed in one's house let alone sleep in your bed. As well, I'd be kinda pissed you hadn't controlled your dog in a park. It's called a leash.

i'm a dog person (and my dog is a maniac who now has to be muzzled in public) so i tend to be understanding around other people's disruptive dogs, but i believe that as an owner you have to assume that people don't like your dog in their face, on their picnic bench etc. and so you should take steps to prevent it. at least, in the city anyway. in the country dogs can wander around and generally behave as they like and no one seems to mind. it's great.

I totally understand and respect that, and I always tried my best to keep him away from anyone who looked like they could be remotely put off by him. But when you have huge bbqs 30 feet away from off leash dog parks its bound to happen evenetually! I don't really know what I'm trying to say here and I don't want to defend any particular viewpoint on this... I guess people just really get angry about stuff...

jeremywhitehorn 04-18-07 12:19 PM

i guess the point is: dogs will be dogs! he ate a damn ice cream cone; it's not like he bit anybody.

where was this, in high park? i stopped taking my dog there.

Shiznaz 04-18-07 12:33 PM

This was the top section of riverdale farm, just before it slopes down to the off leash area. It was a block and a half away from my house so thats where 95% of his walks happened. I didn't really mean to open this up for debate, I was just relating it in passing since I was thinking about large park bbqs

somnambulant 04-18-07 12:34 PM

hehehe.. I'm listening to music on my ipod and I swear every song that comes on I think "Hey! I love this song!"

Of course, the fact that I'm listening to the playlist "My Top Rated" on shuffle *might* have something to do with it.

I'm not too quick on the uptake today. :P

also: definitely down for a bbq on the island. I plan on spending many weekends there this Summer... disc-golf-a-rama. :D

Your mom has big zippers? I.. I don't know what to say..

Shiznaz 04-18-07 01:04 PM

I wouldn't call it exactly easy to open. The zippers are heavy duty and quite stiff. 55 is a bit steep for a little bag, but its really full featured and there was obviously alot of work and thought put into it, along with all the exotic hardware. Its also cheaper than any other similar function bag I saw (mostly those lock holster/pouches). Probably not the best choice for your mom though...

Hey guys and gals, just wanted to intro myself. I am new on this computer forum, and it is a great diversion from writing essays to finish off the school year. I too like the band hot snakes, long bbqs in the park and riding my fixie to York U. 1/2 hour ride, I never see another bike. It is scary in the great white north. Cheers.

Who's the genius that puts BBQ pits beside the off leash dog runs..... no judgments made. If that's the way they set the park up , they're just askin' for trouble. Natch for BBQ'n beside the dog run...it's not like you wouldn't see it. Down for a park pit...cook down. Welcome to the diversion Nerdsgirth.

i think i paid $50 for my PUSH hip bag sans lock holster which was made from $2 worth of pac webbing from MEC. come to think of it, if anyone wants one, let me know; i can make one for you super cheap.

The entire park used to be off leash (or at least not specifically on leash), and then one day they put up a metal sign with a map on it outlining the different on and off leash areas. There weren't even bbq pits in this park; people would just bring a ton of hibachi grills and use the picnic tables, many of which were basically bordering the off leash area. No harm done really to either side, its just caused some embarrassing situations I would have rather avoided. I really hope those kids don't grow up terrified of dogs, as it could degrade your quality of life given how common they are in the city.
PS. welcome nerdsgirth, nice avatar.

But can you wear that bag 6 different ways like some kind of special forces wannabe tool?

I've considered sewing something like that into my Chrome pack.. what kind of uber-thread/-needle do you need to sew cordura/webbing?

I have found many ways to wear mine. I like the codpiece version or, as I like to call it, the toolpouch.

Same reply I got. I think next week I'm going to check this out. My insurance covers $900 for orthotics ( lifetime alotment I think) so it might be a major deal.

My coverage is only $300, so I'm out. I have a pair of Sidi's already, but you can't go wrong with another pair. That said, I only really need one orthotic, but I do want two shoes.

The guy who makes my peg leg did offer to build one with a pedal cleat built right in.

No sewing machine at my house, so I guess by hand. Plus I don't know how I'd get a sewing machine around the waterproof liner in my pack without taking the whole thing apart. I can easily get "behind" it (bag-within-a-bag kind of design) to do it manually though.
