something interesting from the toronto star re: bikes in paris (curiously, it is a subsidiary of an "outdoor advertising behemoth" that is contracted to operate the outfit) ...ironically, it was in the "wheels" section. go figure.

Paris bikes beat congestion

Public bicycle rental may be a way to make the city's streets cleaner and quieter
Mar 31, 2007 04:30 AM
John Ward Anderson
The Washington Post

PARIS–Paris is for lovers – lovers of food and art and wine, lovers of the romantic sort and, starting this summer, lovers of bicycles.

On July 15, the day after Bastille Day, Parisians will wake up to discover thousands of low-cost rental bikes at hundreds of high-tech bicycle stations scattered throughout the city, an ambitious program to cut traffic, reduce pollution, improve parking and enhance the city's image as a greener, quieter, more relaxed place.

By the end of the year, organizers and city officials say, there should be 20,600 bikes at 1,450 stations – or about one station every 250 yards across the entire city. Based on experience elsewhere – particularly in Lyon, France's third-largest city, which launched a similar system two years ago – regular users of the bikes will ride them almost for free.

Anthonin Darbon, director of Cyclocity, which operates Lyon's program and won the contract to start up and run the one in Paris, said 95 per cent of the roughly 20,000 daily bike rentals in Lyon are free because of their length.

Cyclocity is a subsidiary of outdoor advertising behemoth JCDecaux, which runs much smaller bike businesses in Brussels, Vienna and the Spanish cities of Cordoba and Girona. London, Dublin, Sydney and Melbourne reportedly are considering similar rental programs.

Great job paris. Sounds like bikeshare but on a way more massive scale. How the hell did that program die.

I seem to remember Berlin having a similar program... although they may not have been free, just fairly cheap.

It lacked "massive". I'm sure if they had some sort of large scale investment (non-evil corp sponsor?) and could afford a ton of nice looking sterile bikes for the common masses as well as a large scale advertising campaign they might still be around.

They spent 900k+ on the waterfront lakeshore bike thing a while back and bikeshare only needed 72k.

Thanks for posting the Paris link - that's going to come in handy for me+ladyfriend in a few weeks.

Also, anyone know some good bike shops in France/Belgium or random places that one could purchase a frame set or 3 (road, cyclocross, track)?

I think I have one "Flying Scotsman" pass left. Shout me a holla, etc. if you're interested.

If you make it to Ghent there is an awesome velodrome there that is always getting rid of old track bikes. Just around the corner is a small bike shop that has all kinds of new and vintage stuff. If you make it to Zurich the shop at the velodrome there has crazy amounts of old stuff. They have a basement room that has shelves and shelves of Campy boxes going back 30+ years. When he opens the door you get a beam of bright light in yer face and the angels begin to chant. This place is my favorite bike shop ever! Nirifak in A-Dam is great also.

Has anyone seen the documentary / TV show "The Final Hour"? It's a look at Bergman's attempt at the One Hour record in 2000. I just saw it on the weekend and it was actually pretty interesting. Apparently Bergman has the record on a 'new' bike and this was an attempt on using one similar to what Mercx used.

yeah, from what i understand that's what drove obree (sp?) crazy. after the UCI decided that his home-made bike designs weren't track legal and stripped him of his record then implimented the rule that all bikes must have a standard design (after much moaning and *****ing by mercyx), he became a recluse and merycx got his record back. i think bergman's attempt was long after all this went down.

every year there's a snowfall in april and every year people freak out like it's a big surprise. it never much and it never lasts more than a day or so!

that being said, my toes got rather cold coming back from port credit on saturday with the headwind, so i'm looking forward to not having to worry about that again for awhile...
