yeah, those days are over. it's amazing some of the stuff she tells about these kids, maturity-wise. i don't mean the good kind, either; i'm talking violence, sex etc.
anyway, if the kids want to give her electronics, i'm happy.

jeremywhitehorn 04-06-07 08:11 AM

anyone get out for a ride this morning? the snow put me off, personally. i'm here drinking coffee and making banana bread.

somnambulant 04-06-07 08:24 AM

brad and I are about to go for a ride in the Don.. just waiting for him to get here and constantly re-thinking my choice of clothing (too much? or not enough?).

zippered 04-06-07 08:29 AM

well, i've got two sweaters and a touque on... and i'm inside!! stupid badly insulated addition. (he just went out the door, btw.) have fun.

tell me about it. my apartment is essentially a covered patio built onto the back of the house. insulation, not so much.

wes, i think on a day like today, erring on the "too much" clothing theory is a good choice.

survivor man says: in cold temperatures, getting sweaty can mean death!!!!

mmm drafty...nothing like having your fingers slowly turn to icicles as you geek out on the interweb...

Offhoff 04-06-07 09:16 AM

I LOVE survivor man's you sweat you die line. I live in my basement so I don't have insulation problems, but I spent a winter in an attic that never got above 10 degrees. It was not much fun.

PS: Lunch anyone?

STEEKER 04-06-07 09:25 AM

I work deep under ground below yonge and dundas not much heat there and the summer humidity kicks butt

jeremywhitehorn 04-06-07 09:27 AM

well i'm not sweating sitting here in my apartment.

zippered 04-06-07 09:28 AM

actually that's the only episode i've ever seen, but it stayed with me and since i'm bored and lonely i thought i'd share.

i'm still a novice mtb rider and didn't want to slow 'em down/embarrass myself with a temper tantrum. i was supposed to go to niagara falls today, but the trip got cancelled/postponed. plus when i woke up this morning it felt like only a portion of blood flow is actually getting past my neck to my brain :(

here's a couple things to keep y'all amused:

Re: I can't support bike lanes. Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks."I can't support bike lanes. Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks. My heart bleeds when someone gets killed, but it's their own fault at the end ofthe day."

Rob Ford - Toronto City Councillor
_________________________________________________

Really? Do you apply this attitude to pedestrians as well? When a pedestrian is killed crossing the street legally, because some motorist is too impatient, or too distracted, or too uncaring, or too self-important to attend to the important duties of driving, is that the pedestrian's fault too? You do know that happens in the City of Toronto, don't you Councillor? Roads, like all other public facilities, are built for people, not vehicles. The rules for use are clearly codified. Driving a motor vehicle is just one of the legitimate ways people use them, and motorists like everyone else need to act responsibly. Please read the HTA or at least look at the pictures in the driver's handbook! You're supposed to know this stuff before you get behind the wheel. And as a City Councillor, you're supposed to serve all citizens, evenwhile they're not driving. If there's an adequate bike lane I don't mind using it. If not, I'll take asmuch lane as I need to keep myself safe, as supported by the Highway Traffic Act. I'll look for you and signal before moving over (are you looking for me?) And I'll look again to make sure you get it. If the lane's too narrow to share, you may have to wait behind me until there's room to pass safely; that's not my problem, get over it. I won't hold you up for any significant time. Honestly, with the traffic in Toronto cars hold me up when I'm cycling more than bikes hold me up when I'm driving (and I do both with some regularity). Yes, there is room for improvement. We have both motorists and cyclists who need to adjust their attitudes, need a better understanding of how to carry out their responsibilities. City Councillors too, apparently.

C'mon Councillor! Share the Road, Share the Planet!

STEEKER 04-06-07 10:06 AM

mtb riding is fast or slow , it's all fun and I learned to go slow after hitting to many tree's .

tovi 04-06-07 10:22 AM

Thought I'd share an excerpt from this paper I'm reading, which addresses the Rob Ford issue in a new way:

"..In the United States the evlevated risks of cycling appear to be magnified by the cultural attitudes that attribute cycling accidents to the supposedly intrinsic perils of bicycles. In contrast, motorist casualties are not ordinarily associated with the idea that driving is dangerous. From there it is a short step to blaming cyclists for their own peril, an attitude that permeates the reactions of everyone from police and courts to the cyclists' own family and friends and contributes to cyclists' marginal status. Thus, measures to reduce the statistical frequency of cycling accidents may need to be coupled with efforts to change public understanding of the nature of road dangers- a difficult task at best."

TRaffic Jammer 04-06-07 10:23 AM

^^ so true .. the disassociation from danger when driving does cause quite the rift^^

I love Survivor Man he's great. I learned about sweat and die when I lived in Cold Lake Alta, -40 for a good portion of the winter so even kids had an understanding of frostbite, hypothermia and such. If your sweating while riding it's no big deal...it's when you stop that it's gets worrisome. The that's why when winter camping tighties are the rule with clothes and boots inside your bag.
