go outside!

rode along the laskeshore. it's clear of snow/ice, although there's lots of puddles, and twigs and **** (literally/figuratively).

i saw only one other cyclist. a fair number of joggers. a surprising number of cops too, considering i was mostly on the path.

there was a noticable temperature difference when i crossed the humber bridge and then back again. a chilly fog is laying over the center of toronto, but a strong southeast wind is pushing it west. neat conditions by the lake, anyway.

Final Fantasy as in the guy with the Violin? i saw him open for the arcade fire at danforth music hall. he's great live but in my opinion sounds nothing like dan deacon.

somnambulant 03-22-07 12:05 PM

Now that's good timing. I start riding back to the office from the Linux Caffe just as that quick little bout of heavy rain starts. Now my pant(ie)s are soaked.

On the other hand, I did score a delicious portuguese custard tart and an espresso at Rosa's in Kensington. Mmmmm.. I had a craving that had to be fulfilled.

ps. cavernmech: you've totally created a monster by giving me one of those a couple weeks ago. I'm craving them constantly now. I can feel it going straight to my thighs.. ;)

Owen Pallett, he's actually a member of Arcade Fire and BSS occasionally as well as helping out on the new Great Lake Swimmers album. He's amazing live, so is the album IMO.

tovi 03-22-07 12:19 PM

also a member of the Hidden Cameras

I slapped some fenders on the Ciocc and rode, but dang is it messy out there. It is a nice day though and I wore some long shorts, figuring I would be less-filthy once I got home. Didn't work, I am a mess.

Is it a road bike now?

The one man & equipment thing, I guess.

ps. I just googled "hidden cameras" and it returned an article with that title from Toronto Life about that altercation between the motorist and messenger in Kensington last year.

Yeah, I liked it a lot as a SS but I got a cheap deal on the black 105 9-speed shifters, so it is back to gears. It is really nice so far. I guess I should get some black cranks but meh, it works great right now. I am getting it dialled in right now, so there is no handlebar tape yet, just in case I want to move the brifters around a bit.

I have a quick question actually, for the mechanics: I think the chain is too long as I am jumping a couple of gears, can I use the magic link thingy that came with the chain (Ultegra 9-speed) to open the chain and then knock a couple of links off? Or is best to just use the chain-tool anywhere on the chain and use a new magic link thingy? Thanks for any help.

ehh? if you have a chain tool, why bother with a magic link thingy? i always removed links with a chain tool, and put chains back together with a chain tool. no magic link thingy here.

but it'll work either way.

edit: jet, you are effing tall.

Hrm, I've tried to put together a chain with the tool but I always have a hard time with getting the pin into the links perfectly.

I am 6'1" and the frame is a 60 but yeah, it looks gigantic in pictures, dunno why.

somnambulant 03-22-07 03:26 PM

damnit! I left work and my right pedal/crankarm/cleat/something felt a little weird and wobbly. It got worse really quickly and so I pulled in to check it out. I've been hearing a squeaking noise occasionally for the past few weeks and so I thought maybe my bottom bracket bit the dust or a crankarm had loosened or something.. turns out my pedal had unthreaded about 75% of the way. I next to La Carerra so I popped in to use a wrench and I couldn't get the pedal to thread in straight! Do you think I fawked the threads in the crankarm in that short distance? The ones on the pedal looked fine. grrr! Of course, I was so annoying I just torqued it in there anyway which probably will result in me toasting the threads on my eggbeaters as well, but I was *not* walking/ttc'ing it home.

You weren't pushing the pin all the way out were you? The pin should stop just before coming out. Is it a 1/8" chain?

Most chain pins are peened so if you use a chain tool you shear the peening off (:D ) and the pin won't reseat properly. I tend to use the magic link thingy and just drop links as needed. Brief blurb on peening and shearing here

Oh, and I'm feeling happy if a little poorer.
