Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which groupset is the lightest?

I'm just curious which groupset is the lightest?
Record or Dura-Ace? Or is Sora out on top again?

Thanks

No problem, you can actually compare weight/pricing at https://www.competitivecyclist.com/za...AGE=BUY_GRUPPO

I'd rather go Dura-Ace..
It's like ~200 grams lighter and like $500 cheaper...
Damn.. I'll just lay off McDonald's the day before...

Record with carbon or alloy cranks?

On longer rides, I figure I pee out more than 200g.

if you've got nothing to do, you can add up every individual component

Bikes: Colnago ExP, Look 595, Look 496, plus a few more...

... and if you stand the entire ride you can save over 1/2lbs. by omitting the seatpost and saddle!

I guess that's me. I came up with record being lighter when they use the carbon cranks. Feel free to correct any discrepancies, I pieced this together in a hurry.

Record D-Ace
Component Weight Component Weight
FD 88 FD 83
Shifter 328 Shifter 420
Crank 580 Crank 738
RD 188 RD 181
Brakes 312 Brakes 309.5
cassette 156 cassette 173
BB 190 BB 0
Totals 1842g Totals 1904.5g
* Weight in grams
** D-ace has integrated BB

Well it looked neat when I pasted it from excel. Must have issues with cutting and pasting from excel.

Record 1842g
D-Ace 1904.5g

When you take the time to actually fill out the Competitive Cyclist calculator with equivalent parts (ie the same front derailleur at 31.8)

it ends up like this

DA 2180g and $1574
Record 2185g and $1444

Why anyone would pay an extra $130 for DA is beyond me.

Weight weenies is independant of manufacturer and has less chance of being biased than the manufacturer. Competitive cyclist uses claimed numbers from the manufacturer. (I used 31.8 for both btw)

Yes, and weight weenies is also populated by a lot of wishful thinking and inaccurate scales. I know, I'm a big contributor to that site, being a nutcase that measures everything. Not that I am suggesting that the MFGRs are accurate however.

Surprising to me is the fact that the numbers you posted are actually less than what the CC calculator has. I have never encountered a single item, Campy or Shimano, that weighed less than the MFGRs published weight.

Now for the hard part: figure out which is lighter with downtube shifters.

Does Campy make record downtube? I never even thought of that!

Agreed

I didn't include the chain weight because I would go with a good wipperman chain over either of theirs.

I just did it again (this time on CC.com) I got 2180 D-ace and 2046 Record. (I used the carbon crank though, which adds like $400, but it is Record stuff so it should be included right?)

Ah - so the chain was the diff.

I too looked at it with both the CF and alloy cranks, but apples to apples though, alloy both, and the diff is only 5g. Still boggles my mind that DA in that configuration costs more.

What's even more obscene is Chorus vs. Ultegra - $1069 vs $1019 and 2395g vs. 2576g. 200g for $50, not to mention the details of Chorus.

Never thought I see the day when Shimano got so proud as to compare Ultegra to Chorus.

I didn't realize that Ultegra's price jumped that much when they went to 10 speed. ( I used to have Ultegra 9 on usedta bike)

Compare Centaur to Ultegra. Centaur is 30 grams lighter and ~$300 cheaper. Now that makes me feel even better about going with Centaur.

From: Might as well be underwater because I make less drag than a torpedoE (no aero bars here though)
More interesting is whose derailleurs, shifters, chain, cassette weigh less.

If you are a true weight weenie you won't be using factory cranks ,hubs, brake calipers . You'll be using aftermarket parts for those things.
