Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

While it does say Adidas on it, not exactly a walking billboard.

I think what the OP is talking about is jerseys that have large prominent logos or outright ads.

I'm a heterosexual male born before 1970, so I don't feel qualified to judge anyone's apparel choices. And for the same reason, I hope that I can be forgiven for mine.

Eh, I wear what I like. I have black, colors, Team kit, my LBS kit, stuff with big logos and stuff with no logos. If I am out in a bike shop, or online and see something that I think looks cool, I will get it and wear it. If it makes me happy and makes my addiction even more enjoyable then it is, I will wear it. I mean, that is what it is all about right?

My point exactly. I already knew what Rapha currently offers when I asked @cthenn the question that I did because my girl wanted a Rapha jersey for her Christmas (and she got it). In other words, I set him up and he took the bait. Then he tried to save himself by fishing out some old Rapha examples, which don't really scream anyway.

MY GF bought me a Rapha base layer a few years ago for a tour in the mountains of SW Montana and I love it. Guess having to much disposable income has its advantages. I just paid off my mortgage last Friday. Maybe I will treat myself to one of their screaming billboard jerseys.

I suppose since I'm the OP, I'll disagree with you right now. My original intent was simply to start a conversation with other people who have had a change of taste throughout the years. Not whether or not anyone "cared" about what they wear, etc... I don't believe I ever made a point that one should not wear what they like. If some of you don't want to be part of that conversation, please, by all means, don't. I'm not here to start an argument, and I'm a bit insulted that someone would twist my OP to make For the record, I have a few jerseys that have very special attachments to me that I wear with pride. One is my VeloNews jersey and the other two my wife gave me. One is a shop jersey where I used to work a lifetime ago and the other is just a great O'Dell's jersey. It is also not my intent to have a post explode into nasty comments back and forth among members, so at this point, any mod my lock this thread at their discretion.

I prefer plain stuff, unless it's a brand that has some personal meaning to me, and even so, it can't be the hey!-look-at-me kind - I adhere to the principle that less is more. And that's not because I'm 45, since even in the 90's when I was younger and leaner I wouldn't use jerseys with any kind of propaganda unless it was from the brand of my bike (SPZ, back then).

I'll take you at your word that the OP wasn't a troll post but I stand by my reverse-snobbism statement as I read and re-read the original.

FWIW, I don't read the OP that way. cthenn seemed to be the one to inject classism in to it.

I like fun artwork and nice colors on my jerseys. I love my New York Martini jersey and my yellow, blue and red Russian jersey with logos for Aeroflot and Lada. I love my Chinese Popeye jersey so much I got short and long sleeve versions. I only wear bike branded jerseys for the bikes I own and wear them while riding those brand bikes. I always find it funny (but not offensive or bad in any way, mind you) when I see someone with a Bianchi jersey, Cannondale shorts, Trek helmet and riding a Giant!! I am not real big on having the clothing brand on my gear but don't mind it too much. I mostly try to buy Louis Garneau and Pearl Izumi but I do wear all kinds including low-cost Zimco off of Ebay. I love the clothing. I feel good wearing it and try to have fun with it.

I never got why people are supposed to be ashamed of their success. If my business allows me the disposable income to buy a $15K bike and wear only Assos and Rapha, why should anyone care? I certainly don't judge when someone shows up with a 2nd hand bike and T-shirt. It's about the riding. Someone else's financial success or lack thereof is only of interest if I'm doing business with them.

BTW, those Rapha jerseys scream Rapha from a mile away without having a logo on them, especially with the arm bands...those marketing geniuses...

Agree 100%. The funny thing is that I usually don't spend a bunch of money on really nice stuff like wear from Rapha. I just find it pathetic when people like the guy I was responding to take issue with how people spend their disposable income, which is why I said something.

< - - - - Current racer who wears what OP would probably consider billboard jerseys, never shaved my legs.

Guess what else?

I wear ankle socks, the generic shoe store kind.

I have shaved my legs for so long that I will probably continue it even after I stop racing. Just a personal preference.

Most of my bicycling clothing is generic like from Performance, or Nashbar. If someone wants me to advertise their shop, product, and gives me the correct size jersey I will wear it if it is FREE.

I decided not to wear billboard clothes before I got into cycling. Nowaday. I am so slow that those companies would not let me wear their logos.
