At what point did you decide not to be a billboard?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

At what point did you decide not to be a billboard?

I have lot's of "cool" jerseys. Some from clubs, some clubs that I've never even heard of. But recently I've really enjoyed the look of a nice, plain good fitting jersey with no logos, names, clubs, companies, etc... on it with just plain black shorts. I recently arrived at my mid-40's. Is this just "one of those things" or am I sharing this experience with many others here?

I'm mid-40s, and while I proudly wear the kits of my two clubs, I do not, would not, and have never worn jerseys from clubs I'm not affiliated with, or rides I've never done. I don't even wear big logo or heavily branded manufacturers jerseys.

Basically, I'm nobody's advertising mule, bit for the sake of the club ID and our image integrity, I'll "fly the colors" of not only the club, which supports my riding, bit also of the club sponsors, who help make what the club does and provides, happen.

I'm a noob but I think people look ridiculous in those kits. I do have one billboard type jersey given to me by a friend but it's very toned down compared to what I've seen. Most of my gear is plain black or charcoal.

I'll wear any jersey and I'll wear black shorts with a side panel. But no weird colored shorts.

When buying my own stuff, I get all black bib shorts and full zip jerseys.

Socks? Socks must be white.

Billboard kits are good...especially when they are cheap.

I have to say "interesting". Decades ago when I started riding, of course, socks MUST be white....I will say though that these days, socks are kind of an expressive outlet for me. So, I enjoy lot's of different and fun colors and designs. That said, they MUST be real riding socks, and the MUST be in the correct length range!

I ride with a shop team, and in my opinion the kit looks really sharp. I wear it on a big portion of my rides. I also have a couple kits from my old collegiate team, which I still wear regularly. Am I a billboard? Maybe, but I had to buy the kits to race with these groups, they're the best quality stuff I own, and they get me recognized by friends or friends of friends while I'm out riding.

They also aren't the kind of kit where every inch is covered with "sponsors", it's really just the team name/logo on the front and back, some color highlights(mostly black for both), and the clothing manufacturer's name.

Come to think of it, I haven't worn a "plain" jersey in a long time, maybe a couple years. I would if my plain jerseys/bibs were high quality stuff, but I don't own any of those at this point.

How else are you going to let people know you have way too much disposable income than to have "ASSOS" or "RAPHA" screaming at everyone who rides by?

There's nothing cooler than seeing a grupetto rolling down the road in matching kit.

Sometimes I'm a billboard, sometimes I'm not, but at least when I AM a billboard, I'm advertising my own business so I'm OK with that.

I have mostly plain stuff - Aerotech so a small company logo - but recently picked up a pair of Sugoi Cannondale Team replica bibs for $25 NWT (I think 2-3 years NOS), so I'll wear those because I'm a cheap SOB and $25 for $100 bibs makes it okay Now I need to find a white jersey to wear with them...

Really? I never owned any Rapha (though I do have some Torm, which takes some very strong design cues from Rapha), but one of the most appealing things about them is that they're more understated than most kit out there.

I'm 52 and I wear what ever suits me. Some days my kit is all black, hardly any logos some days it screams. I don't care what others wear and I don't gaf what others think of any kit I wear.

BUT if think I look ridiculous in my billboards I might not wave at you on the road.

I've also reached my 40's (some time ago) and that's the point/age that I don't give a ***** what other people think about what I wear. I wear what I want, what I like. I mostly wear kits from a team I work with though, it's a military community team that I ride for (and designed kits & bottles for) and my Navy Rescue Swimmer son runs marathons for so mostly I show my support for them, but I also wear "billboard" kits or jerseys... and I don't care. But I also don't care if you don't like to wear them, that's why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Live and let live!

Right, it only "screams" at people who are jealous, apparently, and this is coming from someone that doesn't own any and can't afford any but doesn't care if other people do.

Live a little.

I have 2 black bibs (Performance Ultra), but the Ultra has peeled off of one pair.

I don't have jerseys, but I do have 3 wicking shirts (2 UA; 1 Asics; so they have small logos on them) in bright day-glo/highlighter colors (yellow, green, and orange). I have matching wicking socks from UA, that match the shirts.

I figure the bright shirts should attract attention of drivers, and if they don't, the socks going up and down should. Otherwise, they're either blind or so distracted that nothing would work anyways.
