At what point did you decide not to be a billboard?

If it's going to be some bold graphic design exercise, it might as well say something, and if it says I participated in a cool event, I'm happy to wear it. I'm not too keen on wearing oversized logos/labels/branding, though, if for no other reason than they just look silly. I may be brand-conscious, but not brand-proud.
What gets me, though, is not the advertising aspect, it's that most jerseys (and shorts to a lesser extent) are designed as printed material rather than as apparel. 99% of cycling jerseys look like they were designed by a grade-schooler. While Rapha is more refined than most, its appearance (for most of their line, anyhow) is still dictated by bold colors, geometry, and the placement of branding rather than by fabric construction, tailoring, or any subordination of color.
One of the most frustrating things is that everything is either black or clownish primary colors, and if colored, either silkscreen images or arbitrary (if not weird) panel blocking.
There's one brand I found that stands out in this regard. Search and State makes jerseys that actually look like something to WEAR, simple, but not boring - with texture/visual interest that is a function of the way the fabric is knit - very cool.

+1. Pay to sponsor the team, and I'm glad to wear a jersey with your logo on it. (Amazed actually that anyone gives me money to race a bicycle).
What I don't get is paying to wear someone's advertising.

That means you don't wear anything from Nike, Reebok, Adidas, any kind of running shoes, etc... Is there anything out there you can buy that doesn't advertise the brand?

I wear what's comfortable, ride what I like and wave when I want to. If you don't like it, eff you and the bike you rode in on. I'm not out there to feed your neuroses.

This is what I ride with. The road sign color seems to pop and it definitely turns heads. I have sugoi bibs and the logos just peels off after a couple washes.

Billboard. Proud of it. I like the look and I love the fit and I don't care about anything except that I'm visible to drivers. Not for nothing but even when you wear stuff without ad logos, most companies make their brand name obvious on their gear now, whether it's Castelli or Pearl Izumi or whatever. And of course, you're advertising your bike unless you've removed all trace of branding. Not that I judge either way. I think it's great to see people out on their bikes and I could care less if they're riding in gym shorts or Lycra TdF kits or their local clubs or even if their pushing thei bike up hill wearing a polka dot King of the Mountain jersey. To each his own. Whatever you wear, rock the sh-it out of it. Do you and do you proud. 😍

I'm 52 and I wear what ever suits me. Some days my kit is all black, hardly any logos some days it screams. I don't care what others wear and I don't gaf what others think of any kit I wear.
BUT if think I look ridiculous in my billboards I might not wave at you on the road.

I was only saying that I can't afford that stuff, not claiming to know whether others can or not. My point is that even though I can't afford it, it doesn't bother me if some people wear it, it is just another kit. Apparently other people find that it "screams" its brand name at them and I am assuming they are jealous for whatever reason. I think the advertising is annoying but the parodies are excellent so there's that...

Haven't decided yet not too and I have no issues with other riders since I think it shows their enthusiasm for the sport.
I wear my 2 Ironman kits with pride since I earned the first one at 63 and the second at 64. After I complete my prostate cancer treatments and rebuild my strengths, pretty difficult though working with zero testosterone, I plan on entering a 3rd Ironman event.

I kinda always liked the DannyShane stuff and the logos are minimal.

In some ways that's going the direction I have in mind, i.e., something more like regular clothes, but the way they print the patterns of traditional weaves on knit fabric is just perverse.
Don't get me wrong; I appreciate bold colorful racing kit and, shall we say, 'articulate' event jerseys, but sometimes I just don't feel like being so noisy, or careless, and the usual alternative, plain black, is REALLY too boring and unappealing.

My jersey selection consists entirely of local shop jerseys and my team's kit. Of course I'm going to fly the team colors (and we have some pretty sweet sponsors that I'm happy to wear the logos of) and whatever sponsor the LBS wants to put on their jersey is fine with me, so long as its aesthetically pleasing to me I'll buy and wear. I don't care what other people think of what I wear.
