Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Instead of sanding, try a hand scraper. You'll be surprised at how it reveals grain detail.

I used to build a lot of furniture, including pro audio speaker prototypes -- until it became my job. It took all the fun out of it.

Yeah, I've been meaning to pick up a couple of cards to try it out. How to they work out vs a plane set up for smoothing?

That was my experience with programming. It was great fun when I was in school and could do creative things with it, but I wisely avoided the opportunity to do it for a living. I would've hated it.

@WhyFi it's easier to set up than a plane. A rectangular card with a stone flattened edge, then burnished with a hard steel rod to raise an edge. Clamp the work, grab the card with both hands, flex it slightly in the middle with thumbs, and the push along the work like a little bulldozer. You'll make very thin whispy shavings and after a while, sore thumbs.

Observation of the day: Not only running is stupid, but it's especially stupid after a long ride. Trust me on this one.

12.1 miles of putzing around today. Got a chocolate cake and only got rained on a little bit.

Spotted Keen's Checker cab on the way home!

Who is Keen, and why is his cab significant?

Apparently you're not a big fan of SPD sandals! Just wait 'til you get a recumbent...

I am so missing the point here. I barely have any idea what SPD means; I think it is a type of pedal. I don't know what an SPD sandal is. I don't know what sandals have to do with cabs. I don't know what Keen has to do with sandals. I don't know what recumbents have to do with sandals or cabs. And this Keen guy is a total mystery to me.

For someone who seems to be an educated and opinionated guy, you fail in the google department.

Ya know, that is really a cop out. Man makes an obscure joke, he should be willing to explain it. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I'm currently wearing a pair of that Keen guy's shoes. They are not sandals.
