My parents are Italian immigrants. My mom and dad would always leverage a cup of espresso when we needed a ride out of the rural community we kids grew up in. I finally escaped that rural community in my 20s and ended up in another one right here in the middle of the Rockies. Go figure. I was a master at making espresso before it was cool in the US. Now I'm still making espressos. But the gear is much better ...not too much different than bike gear.
I did a lot of IT work for Starbucks over the summer. last year. I got one of those Saeco espresso makers with the foaming wand and a bur grinder to boot as a parting gift. Now I'm hooked. I can't leave for work without a home brewed Vanilla Latte ...extra hot. It's insane.
I even have a French Press for backpacking.
There, I admit it. I'm a drug user. A caffeine fiend. But how sublime it is.

I'm busted too. In 2000 I bought a Starbuck Barista espresso machine. Still don't have the grinder, I have Starbucks do that for me. Every day 1 grande wet capaccino. My wife gets a grande iced latte. Worse yet. I've already addicted my kids (daughter 15, son 13). Daughter same as me. Son no foam grande latte. (I admint I usually give them decaf, but they love the coffee.)
The espress machine has paid for itself many times over. I love it. A cup a day whether I'm riding or not.

I like drinking coffee in a paceline. Last time I did this, I took a big downhill slurp, pulling a lead on the group, then I took some quick sips in succession, thinking the others were still slurping, well I took a quick peek between slurps only to find a sipper on my wheel, panic then carnage as the last slurper not seeing the others sipping - crashed out. It was ok though as he was just slurping out of his cheap starbucks training cup, the rest of us had our handmade italian espresso cups, some with custom glazing.
Now I think it was the fault of the slurper, so I am never sipping with this group again - bunch a loosers!!!.

I drink coffee everyday. The French press is the best way to make it. It's basic cowboy coffee, with a way to press the ground beans out.
Brands? I like Peet's Major Dickenson's blend. As far as espresso brands I've yet to find anything that comes close to Illy. You can get the Illy in pods too!

good thread telenick....
strong and black for me. french press, freshly ground.
the crazy italians again...they showed me the light and poured the espresso.
Since giving up cigs, I'm down to just two vices....
Coffee is surely one of them.

Also, having the beans freshly ground does make a difference

I am addicted to coffee and have no plans on changing my habit !
I like the cheepo spanish Espresso's like Goya and El Pico. And, as
embarassed as I am to admit it, I love Starbucks too.....

I have been an espresso only person for about 10 years. Started after we spent 2 weeks in of all places Venezuela where there is cheap espresso in many many places because there are so many Italian immigrants. Plus they produce coffee as well so after 2 weeks of daily (several daily) versions of espresso I bought a machine for the home when we got back from that holiday.
Within a year I had upgraded and have upgraded again (Sylvia (espresso) and Rocky (grinder) now for those who follow this stuff).
Beans are key. There is a commercial boutique roaster (they sell to the public too) that is about 25km from the house (if I throw in a few detours I can make it a 75km ride just to go get beans). A pound fits nicely in a jersey back pocket.
Most espresso roasts are horribly burnt and over roasted. I like a dark brown roast, never black.
I drink no more than 2 2oz shots a day (no sugar), and almost never any drip or other type of coffee. Sometimes one of them has a bit of steamed milk. High end Colombian Supremo seems to make the most crema and the most delicious shot (at least from my roaster).
I can go all day without a coffee and do not feel any craving.
They say health wise that unfiltered coffee (press, epsresso, turkish, percolator) is probably the unhealthiest.
Apparently there are oils called terpenes that get into unfiltered coffee that can raise LDL cholesterol (I think). Studies have not shown coffee to raise BP or have other adverse effects on health other than a cafeine buzz from too much joe.

Starbucks fun........Butcher the word Vente on purpose two times using a contrived southern accent
while ordering and watch the extreme level of condescention and arrogance the 'Barister'(Guffaw guffaw)
assaults you with while correcting you

There must be something wrong with me. I survived the military, college, grad school, cycling, and presently live in Seattle and I don't like coffee. No lattes, mochas, or even drip. I am however, a beer snob.

I'm also a coffee adict... I stay away from the 'Buck...nobody really should drink their stuff when there is so much better out there...
But here is a fun coffee related story:
Last week, I decided that I needed a little jolt right at the beginning of my ride. So I'm chilling out, sipping a latté (with an extra shot of espresso for good measure) when I get stuck at a light. Light turns green, try to clip in my pedal, thought it was in until I got in the middle of the road and slipped off the pedal. So visualise this, I somehow manage to hold onto the coffee with one arm in the air, one hand on the handle bars, one foot clipped in and the other off the pedal. I'll give you one guess what part of anatomy found the stem... I nearly killed two of my friends (pun intended). 30 miles later, back at home, I go to hop into the shower and let me just say that I've never seen a bruise that bad...it is just finally starting to go away. Oh what a painful week, all for a damn yuppie coffee.
