Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay Walkable Cleats

Is it worthwhile getting the walkable cleats.
I keep hearing of covers falling off.

Can you use these cleats without the walkable cover

I have for over a decade, and never have an issue.

Some people have issues walking with Speedplay cleats, but some people also have trouble walking while chewing gum.

Up until this weekend I was using these. But I started my ride with two, and ended up with one.

OP did you use Light Action or Zero pedals? Those"walkable cleats" are only for those pedal systems. They use a modified cleat with teeth to help better keep the cover on.

Depends on what you are walking on and the conditions. Linoleum freshly mopped at gas stations can be quite tricky without covers. Also naked Speedplay trash other people's floors.

I wouldn't mind if these piece of injected molded plastic weren't $20/pair. I've lost my dominant cleat cover from two different sets of these.

I am considering buying the zero with these cleats. is there any drawback to the walkable cleat. Can I use if I lose the cover

It doesn't matter what you walk on, if you know how to walk in them properly. My house has tile floors, and it hasn't trashed them yet.

I have the coffee shop covers. They stay in my jersey pocket and get put on if I want to walk into a store or if I'm in my in-law's house where they have wood floors. I wouldn't spend money on the walkable cleat system because it means buying extra cleats that are designed for an aero advantage you don't need. And they still come with covers to fill in the holes, so you're still putting covers in a jersey pocket.

In short: Buy whatever speedplay pedals you want, they will come with cleats, and then just by the coffee shop covers.

I lost three until I found Shoe Goo. A dab of Goo on each has kept them in place.

From what I can see the pedals and cleats are sold separately... If I can get the walkable cleat system with the Zero pedals is there any downside to this. If you had a choice of the non-walkable and walkable for the same price would you purchase the walkable

Every road pedal I've ever seen, including speedplays, are sold as a pedal and cleat set. They sell replacement cleats, because they do wear out, but pedals are always sold with an included set of cleats. For this reason, I would (and did) purchase the coffee shop covers because they are going for about 10 bucks compared to 50 bucks for additional cleats.

I guess I'm having a hard time answering your question because I don't directly understand your needs here. The "walkable" cleats are really designed with aero in mind, and to me seem a much more expensive and unnecessary route compared to cleat covers. If you want something that will be on you cleats 100% of the time so it's there when you put your foot down at a light, then sure, go for the walkable cleats. Otherwise, an extra 10 bucks will get you very handy, simple to use covers that will store in your back pocket, but give you traction at rest stops, or on tile/wood floors in the house.

There is a new zero with chrom-moly on ebay with walkable cleats...$125....I thought this sounded like a great price... I just wanted to know if there is any downside to walkable cleats over regular non walkable.
I keep hearing about things falling off the walkable

There is no drawback if you don't already have cleats. They are much easier to walk on that even the Keep On Kovers. I really like them and recommend them.

I had the coffee shop covers, lost them inside of a month. Having to put them on every time I stopped was too much trouble, apparently.

I've been using the keep on kovers for about 4 or 5 years now - they're great. Put 'em on, and for the most part they stay on. I got about 9,000 miles out of my last cleats before one of the little spring clips broke and I had to put new cleats on. Before keep on kovers, I'd wear through the screws and the top plate much faster. That little extra bit of traction you get out of plastic rather than metal is nice.

I got the new speedplay walkable cleats for my wife. It's a nice little package. I wouldn't bother with the plugs they give you unless you plan on walking through sand.

After loosing one for the second time, I applied the third replacement with a dab of silicone. It has stayed on since, but that has only been for about 2 months. The others lasted 6-9 months each.

The new walkable cleats are for the X platform and I'm on the zero (I might have that backwards), so that is a more expensive change than the $25 for these covers.

There are two reasons that I switched to the walkable cleats from Speedplay. The first was this issue of the Keep On Kovers coming off. The second is that even though they protect the cleat better, they are still just as awkward to walk in as the unprotected speedplay old style cleats.

I just ordered a new pair. This time I think I'll try putting a dab of shoe glue or silicone on to see if that helps.

Perhaps there needs to be an integrated system where the cleat and shoe are designed as one. This is another area where a better engineered product is waiting to happen. Same for shorts (bibs) and saddles.

Interesting idea.

Let's hope not. I have this vision of a saddle stuck in my bibs that is just not compelling.

I use Speedplay Zero Aero Walkables. I've lost two so far in a year.

I'd be hesitant to use Shoe Goo because Speedplays should be kept clean, and you need to remove the walkable portion to clean them.

You actually don't need the round coffee cup cover unless you anticipate walking around in the dirt or sand. I never bring mine.

I like the convenience but they're imperfect. I've stocked up a few extra covers. This must be part of their business plan.

What I was thinking about the saddle and shorts integration is the sit bones positioning. Aside from the contouring (chafing), the sit bones just might be the number one issue. What we have now is the saddle is fixed and the sit bones are the variable. It should be the other way around.

How this can be engineered is difficult when asked to cater to the pro riders on the pro races. But for others, there might be a chance.

I have the keep on covers on one set of shoes and they work well, never had an issue with them falling off. In fact, it's a pain in the ass to get them on because they're so snug around the cleats.

On my new pair of shoes I bought the aero cleats/covers since they were the same price as buying the normal cleats and another set of covers. I haven't had any issues with these falling off either...same thing, they're extremely snug on the cleat.

I bought the shoe goo yesterday and applied a little line of goo at the top and bottom of each kover.
I hope this works.
