Reported for triggering.
Anyway.
Our trip meant that we were away from our pup for 11 whole days. I think that's the longest we've been away from her in her 2.5 years of existence.
Best feeling picking her up from the kennel yesterday. She freaked out, and the level of cuddling was off the charts when she got home. Would not stray more than a couple feet from us.
She also picked up an ear infection, probably from the doggy pool they have. Good thing we still have the med goop from the last time this happened

Lewis knocked my bike over and ate the hoods and bar tape. He gnawed on the shifters and ate one of my socks. Ass face.
My Enve bars survived the gnawing (bar plugs did not), but I used the destruction as an excuse to go back to Deda aluminum bars. They were $98 yesterday.

We're going to have to buy a couple helmets, too.

He also still gets itchy ears from mites on occasion. I imagine this is pretty likely in a kennel. Take a look in the ears to see if there are little round black scabs. If so, it might be a mite infestation.
I have a handful of ear sauces we use, depending on the source of the problem. The mite sauce has pyrethrin (bug killer) and is much more liquid than the other sauce, but it only takes 2 applications to solve the problem.
To help with the itch, I also apply a more viscous sauce that contains 1% hydrocortisone.
Gotta use the right tools.

Our dog's diet used to give him ear problems we thought were infections.

A shower chair is one of the most divine things ever invented. The circumstances surrounding its use usually suck, but it's a bright spot in an otherwise ****ty time.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
Speaking of addiction, do you recall @Heathpack when the Rapha fall sale typically happens? I feel like I remember them having a spring sale to move winter stuff and a fall sale to move summer stuff. Maybe I could email them and mention that I've taken the survey twice without ever using the code...

I think so. It is our only wreck in 34 years of tandem riding. We've both wrecked quite a bit on our singles but never on the tandem.

Got crap service at my usual Tuesday night haunt last night. Been going there for years. Was pretty pissed off last night, but my wife made me sleep on it. This morning I sent the owner a message.
Yesterday we went to [redacted] as we do every week, but the service was not up to what it should have been.
[A] was great as always, but we sat in [C]'s section. When we got there she had two other tables and one was just closing out the check. We got our drinks and menus etc... fine.
Another couple got there shortly after us and they received their drinks, but it looked like they never got menus and they walked out before they finished their drinks. They seemed very annoyed with the slow service (they were mumbling about it as they left).
[C]brought out my burger 5-10 minutes before [My Wife]'s.
We would go 10-15 minutes without drinks after finishing a round.
It was just poor all around and I don't think she had more than 1 or 2 other tables throughout the night. Not the first time we've had poor service from her. We hadn't seen her in awhile and I honestly thought she had been fired until we saw her last night.
After the first round of trivia [My Wife]and [Our Friend] have gotten in the habit of ordering a 21+ shake, it's their thing they do it every week for the last year or more. This is an advertised Tuesday special with a discount price (that the computer NEVER calculates and the we always have to complain about).
They were told that [Bar Tender] refused to make shakes. Flat out refused... I'm thinking back to a few weeks ago when the "freezer was broken" and before that when the "blender was broken" for a month and I have to wonder if that was just lies. If it's too much trouble to make just take them off the menu.
As we were closing out our tab for the night I wrote a check. I don't often write checks to pay my bill there, but it's not uncommon and I've been doing it since before it was [redacted] and as recently as a few weeks ago. Never been an issue before, but [Bar Tender], I'm told by [C], said it wasn't allowed.
It feels like some people over there have just shut off and don't care about the customers anymore.
Again, [A] was awesome. She even stopped at our table when it was clear we needed some stuff. The kitchen did great, food was good and came quick even if mine came sooner, but I don't blame the kitchen for that. Overall though it was bad and I'm still pissed about it this morning. Obviously. Not just for my own experience since I'll of course be back, but those people who walked out... you'll never see those customers again and they'll tell their friends as well.

I had this gnarly workout on the agenda this morning- two 20 min TT intervals at 105% FTP. Kind of tired legs, I think the MTB taxed some different muscles last weekend and I'm not fully over that. But still, I kind of went into this morning's workout just feeling confident I could rock it.
I felt so good for the first interval that I wound up doing it at 108% NP. I knew I was over but wanted to push the edges and see if I could still make the target on the second one. I'm racing a TT on Sunday and I'm pretty good at pacing these things, I can pretty much hit the target that I want, and ride the splits however I want, as long as I stick close to FTP. The problem with that is that riding these things a little over FTP is physiologically a given. So pacing it well is all fine & dandy but it can hold me back a little- I'm not going to throw it down if I'm feeling like perfect pacing is an accomplishment.
So for me, I'm starting to think I've learned the lesson "don't go out too hard in a TT a little too well". I may find my break through in improving my times by riding harder at the beginning and seeing how it goes. Maybe I can sustain that power the entire time. But if I can't, surviving the second half without collapse is pretty good too.
So that's what today was about in my mind. I rocked the first interval at 108% and still hit the second one spot-on at exactly 105%. Yes, I was tired for the second one and a little nauseous but overall the fact that I could do 2 x 20 min at 108%/105% bodes well. But this is what I've been discovering of late- that I have a good ability to go out semi-too hard and still survive. Eventually hopefully that turns into going out too hard and sustaining the too hard, nice to feel like this is a viable approach to a TT.
Sometimes my Fredly friends (who I love dearly) ask me when I'm going to stop with this whole being coached business. It's so hard to explain- I love just noodling around and getting coffee with them for sure. But the workouts and racing are challenging & interesting to me on a whole other level. It's not drudgery or bleak, which is what I think they imagine. It's kind of awesomeness and fun in its own way.

I know if I tandem crashed with my wife and she got hurt, she'd never get near a bike again. I doubt she'd let me near one, either.

@Heathpack I was thinking about you this morning when we were watching Flipping Out. Jeff Lewis had to take his pit bull into the vet for a ruptured disc I think they said and it had emergency surgery and was paralyzed (I believe only temporarily). He's in LA, but the surgeon was a guy and not you.
