Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't feel so bad about not getting the beads seated now. The first gas station had a ****ty little compressor that did nothing to pop the beads in to place. At the second station, however, I soon heard the joyous pops of the beads locking in to place on the first wheel. The second wheel? Not so much. Took it over to an LBS and dude struggled there with it for about 10 minutes before we gave up. Going to try popping another tube back in, locking the other bead and giving it another whirl.

Oy.

I mounted a couple of trainer tires this week. First time installing tires with tight beads and several months. Ooof.

Some combos are harder than others. I find that removing the valve core and using a blow gun attachment on the compressor works well.

ProTip: When you are at lunch with work people loudly talking about how bad other associated companies are at their jobs, make sure there isn't a table full of people from that firm 10 feet away in the same restaurant.

Yeah, the wrench at the LBS gave that a try, too. No go, obv. Will try seat the opposite bead tonight, but probably will not get to a compressor until tomorrow.

That will take probably 30 real miles or 75 Zwift miles (sick burn @mvnsnd) to burn off. Negative kudos.

What's the rush? Spread the work out, one per day.

Quick observation on going back to calorie counting:

The first time around it was difficult to get into the habit of logging things, the idea of entering custom recipes was such a pain, and hammering myself into the 2 pound a week plan made me hate myself.

The second time around, I know this is what will work. Nothing is a surprise and from the first morning, logging things has been naturally easy. And this time I'm more concerned for my health than my vanity, so one pound a week is fine and it's a breeze. It also helps that I've recently gotten into the habit of making dinner at home. Recipes are simple enough to enter and they're generally healthier. It just seems like a walk in the park compared to last year when I first started.

I think last year was a good learning year. I went from calorie counting on an extreme plan while trying to squeeze in miles with a new baby and beating myself up while family and work stress just kept building up around me to giving in completely and burning out a little bit. So I had a net gain of about zero over the year, but now I feel like I have a healthier approach (both physically and mentally) to working on my health and fitness. Looking forward to a good year.

Also: they gave us the day off work tomorrow for meeting and end-of-month goal, so I'm gonna go and do about 50 miles tomorrow.

Honestly, this is one reason I'm giving up on tubeless. I LOVE the Bontrager TLR system because when everything is brand new, setup is a breeze. Then when I went to replace the tires and set up another tubeless set, I found out after futzing with the rear wheel for like an hour at the shop that the plastic rim strip had deformed around the holes for the spoke nipples and it *just* intersected with the bead of the tire. I had to replace what I thought was a permanent solution to get the tires bead again.

I will go that route down the line for a CX/gravel type setup, but I don't think I want to fuss with it on road ever again.

Awe, he gave up too easily.

Your LBS guy probably did this, but try spraying some soapy water around the bead, to help slow the rush of air.

Another trick for really stubborn tires is to use shaving cream around the bead. We've only ever had to resort to shaving cream with stubborn fat bike tires.

One down, two to go. No injuries so far but the day is young.
