They were always on top end team machines, so YMMV. Of course, that damage could also be prevented by geometry/fit since bar ends may swing above or below the top tube. Just so happens that all the guys on that team have fits that allow this to happen.

ProTip: talking to a buddy who races on a domestic elite team sponsored by BMC, he says every guy on the team has gone through multiple frames. Apparently they have a tendency to crack on the top tube when the bar ends swing into them during crashes.
