Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think this is the point where someone jumps in and points out that an investment firm started by two Walmart heirs bought a majority interest in Rapha for a whopping $260 million. They will also point out that the same investment firm invested in Allied Cycle Works.

I mean, it's not like Ed Lampert bought them.

Rapha's always been too overpriced for my taste. I always buy stuff on clearance.

Also, a Schwinn heir produces hand-made bikes in Wisconsin.

I'm of the opinion that people shouldn't be judged by the sins (or lack there of) of their fathers.

Can you buy them at Walmart? If not, maybe we should introduce them to the Walton kids.

BTW...I got called an elitist in a thread in General when I mentioned I was excited about possibly visiting the Rapha store. The one piece of Rapha I own is a base layer. Not exactly wearing it as a badge of prestige because it's a, you know, base layer, so no one sees it.

I don't often get to buy stuff on clearance because I almost never run across stuff that I like on clearance racks and I don't like buying shoes/helmets/clothing online (unless I already own stuff by the same manufacturer and I'm certain of fit).

I guess I'm more hassle averse (I don't like the shipping games with returns) than price averse (as long as quality is in line with the price and I feel I'll get my money's worth out of it). If Rapha were in stores around here and it fit well, I'd probably jump on a sale.

Base layers are totally elitist. You know what my base layer is? Skin. I'm a man of the people.

That's because it's not your money you're spending.

BTW, should I have a cycling vest? Is it really worth the expense of a "good" one? If I get a good one, will I wonder what I did without it?

I might need to return some bibs and if I can trade them towards a vest that the manufacturer makes, I might go that route.

My bday is in late October, but I'm happy to receive a gift early, brother. XL in a Rapha jersey will probably do it.

As soon as Walmart adjusts the Rapha line to 'murica sizing, I'll be a M.
