Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A working holiday for the eclipse? Or for National Cupcake Day?

With traffic snarled, it seems it would be a great time to ride.

That is the mistake most people make and which likely explains datlas not having takers for his bounty. Folks just refuse to wait for store-bought peaches to get ripe. Even a mediocre peach is pretty special if you wait for the skin to shrivel a little bit. Peaches are not supposed to be crisp. I suspect datlas's coworkers rejected his tree-ripened ones, because of never having had one that was ready to eat.

I dunno about that. I usually buy peaches and nectarines in small quantities to test them out - ripeness aside, it's not uncommon to get some with a somewhat mealy texture, which absolutely ruins it for me. I believe it's a sign of poor temperature control during transportation/storage.

They probably cost more than $2.

One store, I read, was selling them for $20, on account of the shortage.

Well I did say "mediocre". Mealy, that's just awful. Nothing mediocre about that.

Being a quality tool hoarder, when purchased, the cost was no object.

It's so disappointing. You pick them out and wait and wait and wait until that sweet ripe smell beckons when you walk by... and then you finally take that first bite only to immediately look for someplace to spit it out.

Yep. I've certainly been there too. It's a lot like raw oysters. You don't expect satisfaction 100% of the time. But when they're right, oh man, they are good.

Actually, we have had great success, for a price, with having them shipped from South Carolina. Those guys have some great peaches. And you can check online what variety is being shipped each week. There is a series of videos made by an ag extension agent describing the type available each week and how wonderful they are. They arrive in great shape and no more than a day or two away from perfection.

Another very reliable source is Costco. Theirs come mostly from California but are usually superb. And 12 in a case really aren't too many even for a small family. I mean one crisp uses about 5 of them.

After lots of contemplation and hand wringing, I have finally decided to defile my 72 World Voyageur with Dia Compe aero levers. I took them off of the Prelude this afternoon. I may go all out and put some black Tektro calipers on there too.

There was some gnashing of teeth too.
