Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For clipping out, everyone has a preferred place on the crank circle where the torque for unclipping is just right. For some folks it is the bottom of the circle. For others it is the top. There may be some who like 3:00 or 9:00. And it can be different for the two sides of the crank. Just let LoP hold up the bike and you try out different positions to see where you have the most strength in your ankle to get out. And most folks do better twisting the heel out, while others like twisting in better. You just have to make sure you don't run the heel into the drivetrain.
Thanks for the advice. The clipping out is coming along fine. Actually, in and out are getting to be relatively quick on the right. Out on the left is a little slower but only because I expect I'll have a devil of a time getting it back in. It doesn't seem to be a weight issue. It seems to be a question of being able to line it up and then clip in while it is. We're going to experiment with loosening the pedal tension and maybe I will try to pick up more things around the house with my left toes so that foot is more coordinated.

Thanks again and sorry for so much bike related content.

Now my bike's drivetrain needs a very good clean.
Halfway Point Cafe would be a great name for an actual establishment.

Since I switched pedals I can't clip-in to save my life. I fear I will lose my race tomorrow because of it.

It stinks in the beginning but gets progressively better until you forget about it.

Depends upon the year. We have a large coyote population in Illinois but the population in my neighborhood is cyclical with the small game numbers. They're noisiest in the Spring when they have little ones and they catch rabbits. They make a lot of racket and the rabbit also screams with a high-pitched blow curdling scream. My wife often will jump up and shut the windows until they calm down.

At the start? The clip-in Cat 4 start clusterfark?

I'm too old to switch pedals. Speedplay Zero with ti spindles. Always faster than everyone else with Zero effort.

This a few blocks away from us.

You're welcome but poor @Jadesfire has the insomnia. Unless I have to be up early as in "if I was asleep right now, I'd get four hours" I usually fall asleep quickly. If not, I have a beer or something and I'm done.

I am going to try to be patient with myself and I'm also looking at it as a way of strengthening my brain. I'm learning a new skill and using muscles in ways I haven't before and I get that rush of adrenaline whenever LoP maneuvers the bike at a stoplight and I'm clipped in.

Sudoku and crossword puzzles are fine but I talked to a lady a year ago who worked for the Alzheimer's Association- just out of curiosity- and she said the best thing you can do is incorporate physical challenges as well as learning a new card game, etc.

And this is all so exhilarating still. Frustrating, yes, but also fun because once you get to my age there isn't as much potential for happy firsts as there used to be.
