Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My sister was visiting for the weekend and I tried to get her to try Strava.

She doesn't get it.

The weather here is fantastic for riding! You folks need to take advantage of it. I picked up a couple handlebar bottle cage mounts, over in Georgetown, so I can now carry enough water on my hour and a half sweltering rides.

Steel has a small amount of carbon in it so what are we arguing about?

I'm old, and also a person. I don't mind that people call my bikes plastic, either.

I prefer my bikes be plastic, but in actuality, I could likely ride whatever, and be pretty happy riding my bike. Since I do know the difference, I prefer plastic.

Agree. We had a really good club ride today and the weather was perfect.

I rode over two hours this afternoon and required no water at all.

...semantics. I have this theory that Specialized ran a bunch of focus groups back in the mid-90's on how to market the product, and "carbon" scored universally higher in consumer sales appeal than "plastic". And now, here we are.

What's really interesting is if you go back to the era of the Spacelander, when even then they were using the terminology "bonded fiberglass". For whatever the reason, we just don't respond well to "plastic".

In industrial applications storage tanks are made out of what is called FRP which stands for fiber-reinforced plastic. That is basically one version of what CF bikes and fiberglass boats are made of, but I know of no other application where it is called by so straightforward and truthful a name.

The park rangers put out big coolers full of ice water along the trail in griffith park near the Hollywood sign.

Apparently, lots of tourists underestimate the effort needed to hike around in the heat.

Are we bck to the 'plastic' nonsense? Guess I'll have to go back to calling steel iron.

Also, managed to nail my clip-in today. Still ended way back but moved up enough to stay with the main pack while people blew up left and right. Such a tough race, love it. Ended 19th (out of ~70,) barely hanging to the end of the lead pack. The power numbers look really low, don't really show how tough that was. Season over, can't say I'm too sad about it. Not it's all chill rides and Zwift to look forward to. Oh, and maybe the CX thing, although I am not too sure I want to deal with the running side of it, because that's stupid.

...alloyed and specially formulated, forged and heat treated iron, if you please.

I really, really don't get you guys. We been calling plastic kayaks "plastic boats" since forever. The only distinctions I ever heard anyone make is between Tupperware boats and glass laminates.
