Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The trail steward for one of the trails by my house (Knob Hills) had a bad crash at a MTB race this weekend.

don’t know if this has been shared here but i just saw it posted on another page and since he is pretty active here i thought some may know him and we could send some prayers up for him for sure.
Tj was severely injured with a spinal/neck injury very early Saturday morning at the 24hr Rocky hill roundup. He was on a downhill and Face Planted. His helmet saved his life and broke in half. He was rushed to the hospital responsive but no use of his legs. He had successful surgery this morning to fuse the spine and neck area, unclear what vertebrae or the damage that was done yet.
They won’t know if he can use his legs or feeling until they remove his breathing tube.

That was some away race, so I have no idea how gnarly that trail was. It was also race conditions, so riders all over the place, rutted trails changing every lap, etc... it all adds up.

Knob hills itself isn't supposed to be too bad. I mostly hear about "goatkiller climb" as the big technical feature there. Any technical climb is a million times safer than a technical descent. If you get out of whack you can just hit the brakes and unclip and get a foot down. So only as dangerous as getting unclipped quickly ()

Just remember not to faceplant, I guess.

What do?

I can downgrade my cassette to lower tier 1150 for $99 (+60g), go the same 1175 for $172, upgrade slightly 1180 for $178, or go nuts 1199 for $290.

I called, and LBS says only 1 yr warranty on it (even though SRAM says 2) and likely not covered any ways.

I tend to go cheaper on chains and cassettes. I don't concern myself about bike weight though.

Whatever can handle your massive power output.

Since you're just going to break it anyway, the 1150 will be fine.

Huh - didn't even hear about it. That it happened isn't terribly surprising - there are enough people on bikes and new bike lanes that some fat, lazy, entitled people are getting upset about it all. It is surprising that I didn't hear about it, though - there's usually enough haterz on NextDoor that stuff like this will float to the top of the feed.

I mean, vertical stripes aren't going to help much, but someone should have stopped the purchase and/or wearing of horizontal stripes.

Vehicular Cyclists, obviously.

Also, how did I miss this while in town?

I'm pretty sure we hit all the best restaurants and ice cream shops.
