I thought my son's black Talon was a jewel when it was waxed and my son kept it waxed all of the time.

Poetry and music have always abided by different rules. And I am totally on board with language evolving and warping it to suit your purposes, but there is a difference between intentionally changing something to better convey your point and lazy ignorance causing people to say things that make no sense.
My point being: If the other person communicated the idea to you effectively, then you should not quibble with their usage.
If someone says "I wish I could draw a solid conclusion but I don't have enough to base it on, only one piece data" and you fully understand what he/she is saying, no need to chime in, "Ahem, that should be datum". Ditto if someone is talking about taking about public transportation and the need to take multiple busses, if you understand that is the plural of bus, communication has been successful. Different than if someone says, "Hi I'm Suzy, I'm studying computer science at NYU and I need some help finding the right busses."
There's two reason rules of language exist, really:
1. To aid people in communicating effectively -OR-
2. To define social class or education status
The first reason is solid IMO and you should follow the rules enough to accomplish communication. The second reason can be thrown out the door unless you are in a situation where you really need to make a good impression. Lol Bike Forums is not such a place. You application to Harvard, OTOH, is.

We have poetry, which has rhythm and meter and rhyme and offers many clues to pronunciation.
But you are right, which is why if you want to argue that Chaucer wrote the key to understanding T&C into the body of poem, you've got to take 20 pages and actually develop the argument. And know that you could be entirely full of **** in the end and have wasted some serious time writing that paper.
The reality is that it appears there were multiple acceptable pronunciations for a lot more words in middle English than in modern English. Kind of like yall and you all. We know they are the same things, but people say them differently.
Poets took serious advantage of this type of thing way back before paper was easy to come by. You couldn't just print 10,000 copies of your story, if you wanted it heard it was recited. You needed it to be memorizable and poetry made that possible way back when. All you have to do with poetry is read it multiple times and your brain just memorizes it (or at least mine does)- its the original purpose of rhythm and meter and rhyme and assonance and so on. I've read lots of prose but its very rare that a line of prose pops into my head 30 years after I initially studied it. This happens all the time with poetry though, to the extent that sometimes when I'm in the car, I turn off the radio and just go ahead a recite some poem out loud that popped into my head.
This darksome burn, horseback brown, his rollrock highroad roaring down, in coop and in comb, the fleece of his foam, flutes and low to the lake falls home...
Way better than the Morning Show with Dumb and Dumber
