Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I see. I went to Swarthmore College back in the 70s. Fantastic area for cycling and that's where I got into racing—intercollegiates and the training crits at Willow Grove. I forget the name of the club and sponsoring shop north of Phila, where Miji Reoch and other notables rode at the time, but we were in awe of them. Went to grad school at Penn, but spent my spare time on the train going to visit my future spouse in Boston.

I know where that is. Back in the day there was nothing down there. I was on 29 at maybe 9:00 in the a.m. Very little traffic going down the hill. Got passed by maybe 3 cars until Phoenixville.

Yup. A few years ago there was NOTHING there. They built a huge development behind the WaWa. There is also a NafNaf grill, which is essentially a Middle Eastern Chioptole (not bad) and a few other stores. That, plus the new PA Turnpike slip ramp, has increased traffic in my area bigly.

Correlation? Or causation?

@DougRNS should buy the abandoned Sharpsville gas station and start a WaWa. Maybe he can revitalize downtown?

Downtown Sharpsville, looking South in front of the closed country fair. Revitalization needed. It is true things did go down Hill once @Velo Vol left.

I was googling last night and discovered that the building I once went to church in is now the Sharpsville Historical Society. You should go there to round out your tour of the @Velo Vol Sharpsville experience.

Sharpsville Area Historical Society

Those places make me sad. So much prosperity, optimism, order, and hard work abandoned. Seems to me, small town America had its drawbacks, but it bred many generations of mostly good people. I'm not sure some of the physical and social environments replacing will do that.

I lived there ~age 2-5, so calling my "home town" is a stretch.

Gonna return that space of sparse, irrigated seedlings back to sand.

Also check out the modular two-car units.

Old school for sure. Now they simply drive 'em on and off.

BTW...We call the locomotives at the rear "helpers", not "pushers."

I had a $20 REI bonus card that was expiring today, so I had to spend it on something. Picked up a Topeak Road Morph Mini (or something like that) for $17 bucks after the bonus card. The Topeak seems to work considerably better than my current Lezyne, but I still hope that I never have to use it.

Pushers is in fairly common usage to denote helpers.

I worked driving cars off of trains one summer. Pretty fun gig. Did take a while to set up the cars, I guess that's the time they were trying to save.

Lingonberry jam is frustrating. When we get it, we'll end up using it a few times with appropriate meals... and then months later we'll end up throwing away the other half of the jar because we never wanted to "waste" it on something silly like PB&Js.

"Lingonberries almost completely prevented weight gain in mice fed a high-fat diet, a study at Lund University in Sweden has found - whereas the 'super berry' açai led to increased weight gain. The Scandinavian berries also produced lower blood sugar levels and cholesterol."

Between those and cheesecake, I think my 15 pound weight-loss Christmas present may just become reality.
