Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Excuse the blog post.

I stopped weighing myself in Oct, when my outdoor riding season was winding down and (more to the point) when the batteries in my scale died. It only took me four months, but I finally got some replacement batteries (I mean, really, why would you spec AAAs in a scale? It's not like you don't have room for AAs instead ) and started tracking my weight again. The bad/expected news is that I've gained weight since. The good news, and what I'm choosing to focus on, is that, last year, it took me until June or so to reach my current weight. So yeah, I'm fatter and undoubtedly too fat for this sport, but I'm also four months ahead of last year's pace. #silverliningoftheextralayer

You have two small kids and are an involved dad. I was fat in those days too.

You can always give up breakfast and lunch for a piece of fruit and a slug of whey powder and make peace with hunger.

Finally got in some real miles today. There were some slushy spots but not too bad.

My bike is a salty mess. I tried to hose it off but the hose is frozen.

Roughly 2.5 chains which also means it lasts 2.5x longer than an upright chain.

Note the eTap, carbon cranks and other carbon bits, Ti axles...

I have an annoying mechanical question and I will start here before I dare post elsewhere.

On today's ride I noticed that the chain kept dropping whenever I went into the small ring. Even with my chain catcher set up properly, and sometimes the chain would skip when on the small ring. I just decided to do the rest of the ride as a 1X in the big ring, and luckily the route was fairly flat so no biggie.

I got home and cleaned up the bike and put it up in the stand. I soon discovered why the problem happened. I have a slack chain. It isolates to the rear cage of the RD. I lubed the pivot point between the RD body and the cage (by upper jockey wheel) as best as I could, and it's slightly better but still the chain is slack and the return spring action on the cage is weak.

I don't know how wise it is for me to try to disassemble this or if it's just a worn spring/bushing.

The RD is Ultegra 6700 and it has roughly 35K miles on it. I am guessing it may just be worn but I have never had this problem before.

Suggestions??

no suggestion but a probable cause of the problem. The enormous power output from your massive guads has stretched the chain/pins/bushings. Dial it back to a mere mortal level.

No properly tuned bike should require a chain catcher IMNSHO, assuming properly working parts, of course.

If 10sp parts are going for the same (or less) than the 11sp parts, I'd just replace the damn thing. Unless one gets their kicks troubleshooting stuff in a throwaway age (which I can understand).

I have a NOS 6700 RD already, so I will play around with the old one and if/when I screw it up (likely) I can just use the new one.

Update....I dissembled the RD and cleaned out the interface between RD body and cage. There is a spring inside that has to be wound up as you reattach the cage, and I can’t seem to get it right. Will try again but most likely going to use new RD.

Sad!
