Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just back from a quick 20 miles on the new roadie. I was from ear to ear but.. phew, outta shape too. Temp is already well on its way to a high of 97 today! Kind of a drag to get the new steed just in time to shut down for all but early AM weekend rides. Maybe I'm just a heat weenie?

How hot is it going to be in your neck of the woods today and how many miles will you get in; and when?

It would have to be some seriously hot weather to stop me from riding, like 105 ro something. In the high 90s I'll do 40 or 50 miles, but I'll make sure I know a place to refill my 1 liter water bottle along the way. And I actually seem to need to eat more when it gets really hot (at least it was like that last summer).

My after work rides have been starting out at 97 or 98 degrees and then falling to 88 or 89 by the end of the ride. (30 miles, starting around 5:30ish) On the weekends I ride in the morning 40-60 miles, high 70's to start, low 90's finish.

I beat the heat commuting by getting to work at 7AM, and leaving for home at 7PM (I'd rather be sweating and disgusting, but that's life I guess!). I beat the heat on weekends by getting on the road early too (left around 7:30 for a 70 miler last Sunday). Low 90s these days in and around NYC.

twas 97 at 10 AM today morning... I was hooking up with Celticfrost and ****zdog(Who couldnt show up) from BF as part of a slow ride 12-14 MPH 20 mile ride... After 1/3 of the ride, a few of us split and pretty much held it at a good clip from there.. I bonked 7 miles from stop and had to stop... my HR was sky high and the bidy was overheating.. Once I got the ticker down, 3 of us took it easy and cruised back..

Since now there is a BF member who has seen me, I think he can attest to my skinnieness and posing abilities henceforth ...

Really not that big a deal, though, other than just getting the bike. The oppressive heat is only 2-3 mos out of the year and winters are mild so I'll be a ridin' all those months when BF members are lamenting the ice and snow and how boring the trainer is. LOL

I would commute the 22 mile round trip to work in a heart beat, if not for one thing - grunge. Can't offend co-workers with my aroma and can't think of a reasonable way to get cleaned up after the morning ride in.

87 here @ 3:20pm and what's weird is that our temps will actually go UP from here on out til about 6pm... then it'll taper off and end up in the 70's by around midnight. Luckily our humidity is only 40% right now. What sucks is that at 2am when I get off work, humidity will be in the 90-98% range. It makes my hands all clammy and such. Great riding temps but the humidity is rather annoying.

If you have a restroom at work, it can be done. I use a washcloth at the sink in one of the public restrooms at my campus, rinsing all the exposed skin and wiping down my shoulder-length hair. I keep a bag of toiletries in my file drawer (I have no office of my own but share with dozens of other adjunct faculty.) After I've rinsed off, I take a stall and undress and clean the rest of me with the washcloth, then go over again with Wet Ones (I like the citrus-scented kind.) I have a hand towel for drying off but rarely use it because I dry quickly in the air conditioning and it feels good after my mid-morning commute, when temps are already nearing 90. I get dressed (I bring my clothes every day in panniers,) and then I go out to the sink again to put on make-up and comb out my hair, which I allow to air dry. I use a body spray, too.

I smell great and feel as refreshed as if I had just had another shower.

There is a heat wave or a small wave for 2 days... True that the winter weather stinks but hey I can ski ...

My wife and I got in this afternoon from boating in Colorado ( did a little riding, too). I was welcomed by 94-95 degrees , 40% rh and an ozone alert(As a climate control professional, I can say with some authority, that's real fxxxin' hot) . What a rude shock after the cool dry climes of the Rockies! I got out for a little over 30 miles and I admit that I suffered. Here's to the hard men and women who are riding in hotter conditions!

In Boston! And hot and humid in NYC. I grew up in NY, and lived in MA for many years before moving to California. It'll irritate you to hear that southern Californians complain about how hot it is anytime it goes over 80, even though it's almost always dry. I just did about 25 miles on the San Gariel River Trail out of Asuza. Close to 90 and windy, but eminently doable and pleasant even to an out-of-shape dodderer like me. This area is paradise for cyclists.

I found a solution to the heat. Yesterday, it was in the upper 80's/low 90's when I took off for a ride. Noticed that the clouds looked a lot like they do in the fall, and got to thinking about how great it was to ride in October and about football season, and how when I lived in Knoxville, I'd ride during the football games since there was never any traffic on the roads. Thought about that the whole ride, managed to brainwash myself, and never noticed it was hot!

Now, if I could just do that everyday!

I will not only attest that Skinnyone is an appropriate moniker for you, but I will also attest that your poseur skills are right up there w/ my own . I would say on a poseur scale of 1 to 10, we were both a solid 8. I may have lost a point because I had forgot my overpriced Smith sunglasses. And the only reason you bonked was because you did the majority of the pulling in the 97 degree heat.

Wow! My hat is off to you Longhorn. I'll have to put some thought into this. Probably would need a new bike too. Hey!

I went out today High 95 30% humidity. It sucks the first 10-15 miles then your body gets used to it. Be sure to carry lots of water. I ran out of one bottle in the first 1/3 of the route (50% of each bottle, one bottle water, one with cytomax). I sipped sparingly the next 1/2 of the route. I could feel myself not sweating for a while. I came up to the Habitat House that is on the bike path and went straight for the water fountain. I started sweating almost immediatly after water touched my lips.

I guess I need to carry a third or even a fourth bottle (my bottles are 24oz) Any suggestions on a solution to holding more water. I have a camelbak but theres no way I'm having that on my back for 40+ miles.

Yes, it does have a certain ring to it. We'll have to see if we can get a charter from OCP headquarters.

Yeah, lots of options. Check out the Minoura line of hydration accessories. Nashbar carries some of their stuff.

You can get a set of bottle cages that attach to your seatpost and sit right behind your seat. So you could in theory have 4 bottles, but wouldn't have a place to attach an under-seat bag. Handlebar bag, maybe?

Today's high was 103 with 14% humidity. I left at 5:30, rode 64 miles, and made three refill stops with two bottles. It was 76 when we left and 94 when we got back, which feels just fine because of the low humidity. You can't even feel you're sweating until you stop. My 6 mile ride in 110 degree heat the other day was a different matter entirely - it burned to touch my bike frame and felt like I was riding in hell... The only way to beat the heat here is to ride early. It's still in the 90s well after dark, so evenings are out.

I don't use a under-seat bag.

I do however have a carbon seatpost and don't know if it would be alright to clamp anything to that.

The minoura one that attaches to the seat rails might work.

They say the Zefal magnum bottles are 33 oz. Performance has them. I have some bottles that are a lot bigger than that. I just got back from a ride I'll post a picture after I get cleaned up. The ones I have are "California Innovations" I found them at a local drug store chain in Rhode Island, only in the summer.
CVS drugstores. The must be close to 40 oz per bottle. if you have 24oz x2 = 48oz. These are in the range of 40 (maybe) x2 = 80 oz. using just the two cages you have. Warning: they are difficult to hold onto until you get used to them. Forget about using them in a fast pace line.

edit post:
The middle bottle is the Zefal Magnum they claim 33 oz. The one on the left is California Innovations. I just looked at the bottom, it says 1000 ml. I believe that is one liter. They fit in a standard cage. A really soft flexible cage might be a problem. But I have used them in many types of cages. I have used them off road in an aluminum MTB cage. Just trail riding, not really blasting around. I have used them in aluminum, stainless, and Ti road cages on a road bike, a couple of times a week, for a couple of years.

Two liters two cages.

Yesterday was over 100 and there were folks riding in mid-day. Crazy!

I went out this morning at 5:30. Weather was great, about 70 degrees, and almost no traffic, which meant that I could ride the main roads instead of the back roads I usually ride. I was finished my ride by 7:00, so the temperature didn't rise much during the ride.
