Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's the type of road I hit that speed on.

Same type of road that I hit 49 on while descending into Ticonderoga, NY BITD. It was actually highest attained speed of my cross country trip.

I take blood thinners daily. Sacrificing speed is wise.

Tomorrow is the Ride of Silence. It starts near my house. Haven't been on it in year. If I do ride to work tomorrow I will probably skip it because I will have gotten up at 4:30 a.m.

Some in my family from the "old country" had a belief that going outside after ironing would cause a cold.

I do consider it fast going downhill under most conditions unless it’s visually straight with no blind curves and I have recently verified it to be free of road hazards. Reckless thrills no longer hold an appeal to me at this stage in life, we don’t heal so fast at these ages. I’d prefer to stay injury free if I can so that I can enjoy all the other things in life that I enjoy. So 35 is plenty.

Going outside with a head? Yeah, I can see that.

The immunologists also tell us that "host factors" can be determinative, to borrow a legal word. One great way of getting colds is not getting exercise.

Yeah, pretty much this. I do not like putting my 62 yo bones and brain at excessive risk. It would be fun to mix it up a bit in packs, but I don't do that anymore, either.

My club does the Ride of Silence too. I will try to make it if I can. I would rather do Critical Mass but I think that fizzled out, do you know??

AFAIK, there hasn't been a Critical Mass in Philly since the '90s.

Doesn't take a mountain or long grade to hit high speeds. It's more a relation of steepness. The drops in my area or very short but steep. For example, I have a 2000' long hill at 21.5%. Assuming one doesn't brake, they're going to hit 50+ mph without trying.

The hill I hit 44 mph coasting this morning is 0.5 miles at 10%. If I hit the top on a tailwind at 25+ mph, I'll go over 50 every time.

Regarding Critical Mass rides, I saw on Facebook that a person was looking for someone to haul their bikes to a CM ride because their car was in the shop. Uhhh, driving to a CM ride. Let me think about that for a minute.

Heaven forbid that they ride more than a couple of miles. they might die of exhaustion. I don't think they've quite got the idea of what a CM ride is about though.

How slow were you going when you climbed up it? To get that fast it needs to be horribly steep.

those really steep descents are the ones that spook me. Long descents that touch 50mph are no big deal.

I climb the one that I went down today fairly often. It's 10% and I climb it ~6 mph. The other one at 21.5%, I only climb maybe every other year.

Riding a fixed gear requires a change in highest spin rate going down hill if riding with someone else or others. Also a good test of climbing quite steep hills.

I don't think you have to think it out much. Fairly typical of the CM people I have seen who aren't seen at any other time either on the roads or the big bike path in this city. Come to think of it, maybe they aren't employed anyway. And certainly when I worked for five councils in my city on bicycling development for three years, I never heard from any of them.

Mt Wellington, which overlooks the city of Hobart, isn't that easy to climb but easier than some I have been on, and the descent's road quality is enough that it has caused a former outstanding rider in Tasmania to crash and have injuries which are -- years later -- still compensated for when he goes riding.

@Rowan, heading to Sydney next week for about a week and don't plan to spend much time at the conference beyond the duties they're traveling me for. Wife will be joining me from NZ and sneaking into my hotel room too. What's essential to see and do in your opinion?
