Speaking of group cohesiveness, on yesterday's ride one of the riders yelled out that we should start doing a rotating paceline.
I think that is beautiful when everyone knows how to do it and everyone is willing to ride at roughly the same effort/pace.
When those are NOT in sync, it's a farking mess.
Guess what situation we had yesterday?? Hint: it was not pretty. But possibly poetic, the one who INSISTED we do the rotating paceline ended up getting dropped (until we regrouped, of course).

I am on a medication that is recognised as a weight gain thing. Can't go off it, and my physical activity has been less than what it could have been. While in hospital, I went down to 78kg, and am now at 97kg. I need to take a bit of care over what I eat and how much, and true to get a little bit more safe physical activity back into my life.

So, I'm going to try to not be rash in my judgement, but it's certainly looking like one of the guys that I ride with has become a pace-pusher and half-wheeler. Last year, he was occasionally dropped. To his credit, he did a lot of trainer work in the off-season and he's riding stronger. On recent rides, though, he's regularly pushing the pace when he gets to the front and it's even more noticeable when I ease up next to him - we've quickly gone from the brisk but comfortable pace, to approaching threshold to "ah, **** it - I'm just going to drop back with the others and let you ride off the front like you're actually winning something."
I suppose this isn't terribly unusual?

For me personally, another issue is that I’m smaller and more aero than many of my male friends. Yet they make more power than me. If we’re riding rollers, I absolutely must use my aero advantage when going downhill and I need to maintain good momentum going into the uphill. So I kind of have to work my way up to the front, I need actively riding both down and up the hills. Whereas they will be coasting down hill and I’d ride up onto their butts during the down hill sections. I’m not being competitive, I’m riding in the manner that will keep me connected overall with the group.
Obviously that’s a very specific example and I’m not saying it explains your friend’s behavior. More that sometimes people are riding how theyre riding for reasons other than douchiness, even though that may not be readily apparent to you at the time.
This sort of conundrum is exactly why I find myself riding solo more often. Sometimes it’s just more enjoyable to go out and ride and not worry about how it’s coming across to anyone else. I had a group ride on my schedule for last Sunday. Previously I would’ve really looked forward to that. But my group ride options boil down mostly to feeling guilty if I ride with any sparkiness or riding solo off the back anyway. At least if I ride solo, I can go out exactly when I want and stop minimally.

The hi-tech stuff doesn't really appeal to me, mainly because the new cost is ridiculously high.
But I have been using a trainer of the old style for a few years and the advice? Don't try to set time-on and distance records and power output records every time you get on. Also, use them more when you can't go actual cycling on the road or track.
Despite the undoubted negativity this comment will generate, for us Strava remains an outdoor excellent way of recording stuff, and on the indoor trainer Zwift has been good -- but don't get intimidated by be passed by large groups or individuals.

However, I’ve decided I need to get some pedaling in the real world under my belt, I’m around 6 weeks from my goal races. Riding in the real world is definitely more zoomy and fun. Moving through the air and over the ground is just a great feeling.
