Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why is that a rule? There's a strong built-in race incentive not to do it, so why ban it? I can't think of another race where it's illegal to stop.

I’d say you got it right. These teams all have weather routers ashore and navigators onboard whose job is to find breeze and sail it at the perfect angle. In the ocean races I’ve done, we have paid for proprietary current and wind predictions and strategic routing before the start and then relied on publicly available weather and current info to update onboard computer modeling customized to the boat’s characteristics. The rules in those races have prohibited private outside assistance during the race in order to prevent the arms race that happens at the level we’re discussing here. You can’t even call up your spouse on the sat phone and ask for the leaderboard.

Happy Boxing Day.
You can stop, you just can’t tie up to land or receive assistance from shore. Boxing Day is the 26th, isn’t it?

Maybe the bike it can be the “dress” of 2021 if you have the right social media accounts and connections.

So you could ask for an update in a thread at OceanCurrentsForum.Net (public), but you can't do so in a DM (private)?

That doesn't make sense. If you want to stop at an exotic port-of-call, to go scuba diving, you should be allowed to. Just as you can stop at a coffee shoppe during RAAM if you want to.

Reminds me, when I was a kid I thought "Boxing Day" was a day where people would put on thick mittens and punch each other.

Nobody stops to check out the Eiffel Tower during the TDF races. Winning comes first. Plenty of time to be a tourist later.

Not raining here until 3-ish. 40 with winds at 10-15 right now so I’m hoping to go outside instead of stupid TrainerRoad.

Going to drive my short route to iff if the snow banks are at an acceptable height.
