He makes fun of his mother and me for breaking a few dozen bones but he’s as bad as we are when it comes to sports injuries. The problem is is that he’s good at it. For his weight and age class, he rarely loses and it’s hard to quit but his 45 year old body is getting destroyed. I remember an orthopedist reaming my butt out after I had my third scapula break, amongst numerous prior breaks like clavicles, ribs, etc. I still had a good cycling sponsorship at age 40 but couldn’t quit. After developing tendonosis of the hamstrings and couldn’t hardly walk, let alone train. It was a huge mental thing to convince myself to stop racing so I understand. At least I could ride a bike for fun after retiring from racing, I’m not sure that he can lift for fun.

My son's orthopedist was able to watch video provided by the weightlifting organization and see the legs collapse in real time and in slow motion. He surmises torn quadricep tendons outer side of the knees. One leg is worse than the other. MRI tomorrow to get the full picture. He prescribed pain killers and a muscle relaxer. You medical guys know more but I understand that the quads are traumatized, spasming and not working and that hopefully with the drugs he may be able to get some motion.

The tendons have tension transducing nerve organs in them that signal the spinal cord to inhibit muscle contraction. That's why stretching a cramping muscle relieves the cramp. A ruptured tendon sees zero tension and the loss of tendon organ signaling can leave nerve activity in that spinal cord segment imbalanced in favor of excitation. This is probably what happens in muscle cramps too, but in tendon rupture it can go on for quite a while. I have never seen it, but I can well imagine it's very unpleasant!

MoAlpha I guess that explains why his legs are straight out. His mother talked to him a few minutes ago and his legs still haven’t relaxed. He took his meds about 5 hours ago.

Trainspotter: just plain wow! Hope for the best for your son. Ours did something similar when he was 16 tearing the tendon off of the bone, and was able to go on to serve 20 year in the Navy., Modern Orthopedic surgery is amazing.
