Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Exactly. The whole point is to measure time. Not look at some tiny gears and junk.

If I wear a watch (or I did until it broke), does that count as a watch person?

today i had an amazing lunch ride, one of those days where things are just gelling. leaving from my office mid-afternoon, i'm not sure i even stopped once, only stopped pedaling a handful of times on descents. fastest ever for the overall route. ALMOST got a PR on my favorite segment, the live segments on my cycling app said i was within a few seconds but the official strava says no, 8 seconds behind. so close!! made up a ton of time on the backside, just NOT QUITE ENOUGH.

segment is 6.8 miles, 802 feet of climbing, 28:12 today vs 28:04 last april.

Nice going, that's one of the prettiest rides anywhere.

yep. power was 7w higher today (229w average over the segment vs 222w) so i'm guessing the wind was slightly more northwesterly on the PR day, which isolates the effect from the outbound side of the loop but preserves much of the tailwind for the return. but you can see how much time i made up on the return - time i lost on the outbound climb, which definitely can be affected by headwinds despite the grades.

more impressive, to me, is that you can see it WHILE YOU'RE RIDING!

Garmin wants to sell me a thousand dollar watch that will control the auto-helm on my boat, among other nifty and redundant functions. Of course, they could implement that in the 20$/yr navigation iOS app they bought, but they won't.

How silly would it look to buy a car with a transparent hood so you can see all the parts and wires inside?

Woke up almost immobile with shooting pain from my upper back into my neck.

Utilized telehealth for the first time ever though, and so long as my prescription actually got sent through it sure beats going to an urgent care clinic.

Also feels weird to actually have good enough insurance that I get health services when I need it.

I've been using telehealth with one of my doctors since everything he does is based on lab results. We can talk as easily over the phone as we can face to face. Saves me a good two hours or more of driving and waiting time.
