I went to bed at a very reasonable hour - 11:30 - consistent with having to get up at 7 to take TOB to work for his 8 AM shift. HOWEVER, at 4:20, I was awakened by one of the smoke/CO alarms, which did 3 cycles of 3-long beeps/pause. And stopped. TYB, Mrs. GJ, and I were all awakened. We were not able to determine which of the 6 smoke detectors had gone off, why it had gone off, and why it had stopped going off. I was awake for probably another 45 minutes, and slept poorly afterwards.
This was a new set of smoke alarms from Kidde, after the previous ones from First Alert proved faulty - each of them failing within 3 months, going off randomly, not responding to silencing, and requiring deactivation. So, now one of the replacements goes off at 4:20 AM for no reason. Great.
I realize that smoke alarms are a really great idea, save lives and all that ****. But, you know, I don't remember them being so problematic BITD of semiannual replacement of the 9v batteries. It seems like it's the new, fancy 10 year battery ones.
As I tried to go back to sleep, I comforted myself with the thought that, while some houses do catch fire, it's only a very tiny fraction of all the houses there are, so the likelihood that MY house was going to catch fire is miniscule.

And that's leaving aside the fact that, yes, a random battery will fail early and you'll have it chirping at you from 2am until something opens. And because it chirps once a minute with the incredible high pitch and in some houses you'll have 3-4 is close proximity, good luck figuring out which it is.
At the last house, one would chirp all the time, very quietly, when connected to the network (this is why I was trying to replace it). Unplugged, it was fine. The chirping wasn't loud, juuuust enough to hear in the early morning or late night.
And of course if you dare to say such things, you're accused of wanting kids to burn to death. But I hate smoke detectors, as currently designed.

Had a nice ride, all things considered. Was around 40 when we started. 8 of us including 3 e-bikes. I put the new jockey pullies on yesterday and it seemed ok. Around 15 miles in we were on a hill and when I shifted to a lower gear the derailleur started rubbing on the cassette. I think the spring in the pivot broke. Tried to tighten the B screw to no avail. I could just big ring the remaining climbs..not. Still worked in the big cog so that was nice.
Friend was there who was Olympian and national caliber racer. Only see him once or twice per year. I think he's 72 now. Had lung cancer about 3 years ago and they removed 1 lobe. He said he really doesn't notice the difference but he was on an e-bike.
Anyway I'm toast again and I have to work on the stupid bike again.

I agree. As near as I can tell, smoke alarms fall into the category of "you have to buy us so we don't have to be good". No standard for sensitivity. No standard for noise. Every change has been to more annoyance. Interconnection so the whole set goes off? Of course you want little Jennifer at the end of upstairs to wake up if the kitchen starts burning. But... the most common case is burned toast in the kitchen, and now the entire house explodes. And of course there are different wired network standards so if one fails you have to figure out the right kind and hope you can still get it.
And that's leaving aside the fact that, yes, a random battery will fail early and you'll have it chirping at you from 2am until something opens. Just woke up. Other than spewing from both ends, I’ve been sleeping since 1:00 yesterday after lunch. I was briefly up for a few minutes this morning but promptly gave up and went back to sleep. Haven’t eaten since lunch yesterday. Afraid to.
Signing off. Maybe I’ll hangout later.

That blistering 85 degrees comment was facetious. It still felt chilly, but the sun made it pleasant. For a couple hours. I’m with Velo Vol. 92 is about perfect. However, in the olde days, every time I visited Merida it was too hot. Acclimation. Sung to the tune of Isolation, by John Lennon.
So it is
