Dang, LAJ sorry to hear about that terrible crash.
Didn't know what had happened, but was happy to see your rides show up on Strava again a few months ago.

I went to bed at a very reasonable hour - 11:30 - consistent with having to get up at 7 to take TOB to work for his 8 AM shift. HOWEVER, at 4:20, I was awakened by one of the smoke/CO alarms, which did 3 cycles of 3-long beeps/pause. And stopped. TYB, Mrs. GJ, and I were all awakened. We were not able to determine which of the 6 smoke detectors had gone off, why it had gone off, and why it had stopped going off. I was awake for probably another 45 minutes, and slept poorly afterwards.
This was a new set of smoke alarms from Kidde, after the previous ones from First Alert proved faulty - each of them failing within 3 months, going off randomly, not responding to silencing, and requiring deactivation. So, now one of the replacements goes off at 4:20 AM for no reason. Great.
I realize that smoke alarms are a really great idea, save lives and all that ****. But, you know, I don't remember them being so problematic BITD of semiannual replacement of the 9v batteries. It seems like it's the new, fancy 10 year battery ones.
As I tried to go back to sleep, I comforted myself with the thought that, while some houses do catch fire, it's only a very tiny fraction of all the houses there are, so the likelihood that MY house was going to catch fire is miniscule.

Happy new year all!
Yesterday, I went outside for a bike ride. I know me too! Was chilly, under 40 degrees. I went to the beach to ride in 6 mile circles, and to buy my season pass for $5.oo off. I took F.B.B with the newly refurbished Reynolds wheels. As I left the parking lot, I could tell an immediate difference in this bike. I'm really happy with it.....except it didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped.
. The first hiccup showed up at around 4 miles in. There was a brief extended neutral during a shift. This, neutral, began happening at random and with increasing frequency, with and without shifting. As long as I kept pressure on the pedals all was well (I was still under the delusion it was a shifting/derailluer issue) So I continued onward, passed the parking area. At roughly 8 3/4 miles in, after an extended coasting durring a decent. The freehub pawls decided they were done for the day. Apparently the lithium grease I used was to temperature sensitive, and the cold air thickened it to the point that I need to walk the rest of the way back to the parking area. Well.... almost all the way. I convinced it to engage for the last mile or so while coasting on a down hill.
upon arriving home and disassembling is I noticed the bearings in the freehub were dirty . So "while I was in there" I popped the seals and cleaned them out and re greased them. I used some of my DTSwiss grease on the now clean freehub pawls, and reassembled. For some reason I couldn't get the shifting clean. It would rattle in one extreme or the other. I tried everything I could think of. I swapped in the super team wheel, it was fine. I noticed a lot of wobble on the Reynolds freehub, so I disassembled it again and took a look at it. I didn't see anything wrong with it, but the cassette was one of the Chinese ones. I put on first one Sram cassette then another. No noticable improvement. 32-11 should be no problem . New chain? Still a problem...
Swapped in a 30-11 Sunshine (china) cassette..... everything is normal....wtf? I worked on that thing till almost 1 am. Sram says 32-11 is the extreme end but it should have worked. I could get 1st through 7th then 8, 9, and 10 would require slack in the cable, but once theycwere happy 3rd 2nd and 1st would need tension.
Stupid bikes!

My rest day must’ve been the ticket yesterday. I was wielding a shovel this morning, when I realized I shouldn’t be able to do that with bruised ribs. Then I found myself carrying five gallon buckets of soil. It’ s a blistering 85A out there today, the big difference being that it is sunny. The extremely rare sunny day this December. I don’t remember that from past Decembers. But I don’t remember much anymore.
I mixed compost and soil, and filled five pots that I will take to the roof in a few. Four have butternut squash(food of the gods), from seed grown in Mexico for the Mexico market. And one of some kind of zucchini that was freebie seed. I also have some San Manzano, and can’t remember the name slicing tomatoes from the same seed company. I have high hopes for this Mexican grown seed. Vamos a ver.

Made it to Flag a little while ago. Apparently the minivan's radiator fans aren't working right now, got stuck behind a slow truck going up a 6% grade and the temp shot up like a rocket, so had to pull over and hang out 'til she cooled off.
Luckily she ran like a top for the rest of the trip she just can't handle grinding uphill at 25mph. Got up to Munds Park and flurries we're flying, whew back in God's country.
Brought gravel wheels up for the Lemond! Also hauled the fatbike up but left the double boinger down south (kinda regretting that already)
I guess the noon pinecone drop was a big deal as people are still swarming downtown. They have 4 blocks closed to vehicles which is really nice. Popped into the middle aged hipster beer joint and got a Bell's Christmas Ale - nice and malty and cloudy.
They have some dumb non-Seahawks football game and Harvard vs UConn hockey on their two TV screens. Sure I could ask to put the 'hawks on but the music is loud and they only have snacks for food so gonna keep strolling up the hill to the sports bar.

Just woke up. Other than spewing from both ends, I’ve been sleeping since 1:00 yesterday after lunch. I was briefly up for a few minutes this morning but promptly gave up and went back to sleep. Haven’t eaten since lunch yesterday. Afraid to.

Had to go after one more to end the year. RIP
Cale Yarborough. This is lap 2... His first lap was the first qualifying lap over 200. They pulled the show car from a Hardees, and won the race. It took me half the race to realize it was a LeMans, and not a Monte Carlo. We were down there racing the World Series in New Smyrna, and were able to attend a few days at Daytona.
