So....
Doing laps in the neighborhood at 11 pm isn't as economical as jumping on the trainer.
Speaking of the trainer, have you figured out why it won't get out of erg mode? If not, why not?
See what I mean? I'm not a psychiatrist, nor do I play one on BikeForums.net, but I will ask questions that should be answered.... RAAM would be 1,001 times worse.

This isn’t always a problem, but when the intervals are short, I would prefer to have ERG mode off.
I had not given it much though, only because the next time I do the breakaway workout I have every intention of doing it outside.
Also, laps at 11 pm instead of the trainer, I don’t have a spot for my trainer where I can use it and not wake everyone up in the house. Not making excuses, it is what it is, which is why I don’t use it more. We are putting a wall up in our master bed room sometime in the future and sound proofing it. All the workout stuff will go there. Then I can use it as needed.
I have just now coming up with a solution. I can take the workout from garmin and build it on Zwift, then do the workout on zwift with ERG mode off. My head just exploded.
Garmin won’t log the workout as complete, not that it matters.

I'm back!
#MOTD fun fact (sans map). The Richmod Buc-ee's is almost exactly midway between dumb dumb land and Velo Vol world headquarters.
Stopped there on the way back. As I approached the entrance a tour bus was being exited. A woman was handing each passenger a $10 bill. I thought about trying to slip in the line to see if she would give me one, but I'm not sure I'd pass for a high school girl.

He kinda went off the deep end. He's changed quite a bit over time and has started spouting conspiracy theories and the Taylor Swift thing was even beyond that.

There is plenty of research to indicate that yes, it does cause psychological damage. Unfortunately the proponents are shockingly not big on reading about it.

Nope have not figured that out. From what I can tell, when using my Garmin 530 as the control on the trainer, you can either set resistance or power. Since the workout I was doing was intervals based on power, garmin opted to control the trainer via power. It sets the power for each zone right in the middle. While riding each “segment” of the workout I can go in and lower the power or switch it to resistance which is what I did to get it out of “ERG” mode, unfortunately when I start a new segment It would go back to power mode.
I don't have anywhere in the house either, which is why I go to the cold dark garage.

Ya same, when doing that kind of interval riding inside, I just do it in "free ride" more with no ERG or other workout programmed. Just like you would outside. Sometimes I'll find segments that are the approximate length of my targets and use that as a bit of motivation.

That’s where the line is hard to draw. I am super serious about it, and committed. I mean when Simon was born I was doing laps at 11 pm in my neighborhood, that’s the only time I could ride. I can’t imagine more seriousness. Just wish my body would go along with my seriousness.

RE: training. I did a little bit of pre-season consultation with a coach this year (January) and it paid dividends for me. But historically I have been self-coached and read all the classic literature (Friel, Coggan'Allen etc). Pretty standard stuff, base in the pre-season, taper down to longer threshold intervals, taper down further or VO2s and race-y stuff. Avoid group rides and hammering over the winter while building TSS etc. Regarding workouts, I sort of just picked random workouts I read and ended up just finding out the ones I liked more over time (15 ish years).
This year, all of that classical periodization is out the window and I'm not really following any sort of plan. I am hoping that come next fall, things will be stable at home with our little one and I can build up a little more volume. Now I am doing 6-7 hours/week on average. I have been lucky enough to get several long rides in since her birth in late September.
My power for shorter durations up to ~an hour or so seems to be holding nicely, which is sweet. I will participate in some number of local criteriums, circuit races and time trials, and probably still do well in the 35/45+ field. Road races, I don't think I will have the legs in 2024 for it. Maybe next season. We have some good ones around here and I have enjoyed being fit enough to be competitive in them.

Good deal. My suggestion was to drop the Garmin as I was reading that. FWIW, I don't build workouts anywhere. 3x20", 4x10' 40/20... Etc. Nothing to build. The Garmin is to record, and record laps.
I don't have anywhere in the house either, which is why I go to the cold dark garage.

Agree garmin is for recording, but as mentioned until trainer road comes into my life I am following a workout garmin created for me based on a race I selected. It tells me what to do each day. I like being told what to do, I fall victim of comfort or just doing what I am familiar with.

Typically I am home during the week which is why garmin built the workouts during the week. So if I am at work on a work out day then I do what I missed when I am home. So far it’s been working. If I am home an extra day then I just do a zone 2 ride. Typically I am home minus a day not plus a day.

Another half day of hard work completed. One more to go, on the current project. Then there is another small one to finish, and a bigger, multi day one to follow. The bikes remain parked, but Alan, my old riding buddy, who taught me where to ride in the Merida-Tixko environs, is in town visiting his kids. He moved to Spain a few years ago. He’s a freelance translator in Spanish, Portuguese, English. I worked hard for six hours today and didn’t t work up a sweat. A good thing because the pump that sends water from the cistern to the rooftop tank crapped out. I’ll get a new one tomorrow. A quick R&R. This is what Winter is for. Doing all those projects for which it is too damn hot during the Summer, Fall, and Spring.

bampilot06 if it's in the budget, you could consider working with an actual coach IRL who will study your history, study your ride files, take your feedback and then develop a living/working plan for you. Most coaching services offer several tiers of service with monthly, weekly, or even daily review/feedback. Weekly is pretty common. That all gets pretty spendy, but its nice to have real-world feedback to make the workouts "living", adaptable, and integrate a human element vs an AI coach or a totally pre-canned plan.

Coach possibly in the future. Wife approved trainer road, once I do that and either like it or hate it, I can convince her to let me get a coach.
As of right now, she just laughed at me. She also told me when I first started this addiction I would never own a bike that cost more than 400.00 Us dollars.

OK ok so maybe that's a stretch haha. But, I think I should at least be able to get out of the house a little more. That's already starting to happen. Even then when I "come back", my training and racing will be somewhat in between where it was pre-birth and where it is now. We are first time parents and are being hyper vigilant about this whole thing. She's a pretty good baby most of the time
