Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In the "show" marching band competitions, they often have a piano (albeit electric) in the pit along with the xylophones, marimbas, etc. But, no, in the typical marching band structure there is not usually a true string instrument unless they include a guitar. Woodwind tune can be affected by the cold. Don't know about the brass.

My all-time PR for the 10,560 foot race is 10:20. Set my senior year in high school. I did not take first place that day.

Oh yeah, but they're basically that device without a strap or a handhold with pitchbender on it. But keytars just look cool! I also liked his outfit, the inspiration for many a marching band uniform

Seems like brass would change pitch with all that metal contracting but you should be able to tune those to adjust to current conditions.

The point is no one calls it that. One can watch plenty of track and field and see no reference to feet/mile.

For track events it's yards, not feet. Luckily 5280 is divisible by 3

That's the issue. They tune to current conditions and then they go inside where it's 30F warmer.

You'll get used to it if you ever take up running, even in events that use the metric system. For many open-to-the-public events, it's referred to as a 5k run but in the Olympics and other sanctioned competitions it's called the 5000m.

It just takes more math thinkin' to figure out the imperial.

TdW Stage 5 short today, "Easy" day, featuring the freshly released "Southern Road" Watopia expansion. I use quotations since I may have ridden z4-ish for the first 10 min so I could stay near the front before we hit the new segment, which is pretty flat.

The new expansion is visually beautiful and easy to look at. To me, the aesthetic went Scandinavian, then PNW USA (Oregon coast). then Mediterranean EU, then pre-colonial Mex or Central America.

It may have distracted me from the work Quality training video that I was streaming simultaneously . Another huge benefit of Zwift - unless I'm going hard, I can multitask. And yes I bill the time . I'm a 42-45/week kinda guy most of the time so ya'll can bite me if you don't like the odd email or call from the trainer.

Well, I didn't get to do as much tasting/drinking as I would have liked, but did bump into an Ancient Peaks Zin during our post-ride dinner that was quite lovely. I've become a fan of Zin. I have found quite a few that hit well above their price point. Most notably is OZV, which seems to be pretty easy to find at all the grocery stores in my area.

The Bovine Classic event was excellent. A chilly (by So Cal standards) 40degF start warmed up to a perfect low-70s by the afternoon. The course was hard, but beautiful.

I've run some 5ks. I once did a half marathon. There were no distance markers posted in feet.

Cycling content. Not a P&R post. I'm intrigued by how man police have bikes. Here only a few of them use bikes.

Portland's bike force grew rapidly throughout the 90s. Then I think they eventually shut down the horsey program in the aughts, those things are WAY too expensive.

we have a decent number of police on bikes. they're trek hybrid bikes that look only lightly modified from stock. if the police here actually cited people for traffic and related digressions, the bikes would be super useful in doing so, you can pretty much get around faster on a bike than a car.
