Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Thylacines...only Thylacines.

I'm 6ft 4ins and run 177.5's. Was going to go with the 180's except I wimped out basically.

My next roadie I wanna go Campy for a change, but the big 'if' is whether I could handle going back to 175s. Not sure Campy does a 180.

Sh¡t, has Nev just roped us back into a crank length debate!?! How'd that happen!?!

180mm? My crank is way longer than that.

Thought I'd just lower the debate back to it's normal level

Couldn't tell ya off the top of my head. I did the parts selection for a guy who just wanted a solid, no BS classic bike. If you wanted to get weenie, you could possibly get a lighter package for the same money if you picked the parts carefully. The wheels aren't particularly light, nor is the stem or post.

What size frame do you normally ride?

yeah, I know!!

After a year of persisting with the 180s, I'm thinking of ditching them and going back to 175

I reckon the relatively (much) lower seat position might actually make me worse off.

I don't know him because he's a few years younger than me and I stopped racing the road at 21. I only know of him through mates and acquantainces. He apparently scored a suspension for thumping a bloke that raced with my club during a race.

Isn't Tighello a nephew of the Sanspaghettis?

You know big Tom rides his VXRS module with the saddle about 2cm lower than it "should" be? You could say you just want to be like Boonen....

Correct on all counts. Played a bit of Aussie rules during his susp.

He and the Sansonetti kids (Steve, Adrian etc ) are cousins.

Ultegra is slightly cheaper than Chorus, so you could put the cash back into getting some sh¡t-hot wheels, like replacing the hubs with some Tunes or Soul-Kozaks and get the weight of them into the sub 1400g category.

Short legs long torso? A sloping 52cm would be insanely light, probably hovering around 3lbs depending on how stiff you want it.

They reckon all the problems Boonen has with gears slipping has nothing to do with the frame flexing, 11 sprockets or Campagnolo equipment. Apparently he buggers around with the barrel adjusters during races, is a dud mechanic and farks the adjustment up!

Repeat after me - "Retail is for loooooseerrrrrssss."

For 9k I could do a full custom Tephra Ti frame with Reynolds carbon stays, full Dura Ace, Zipp 303 wheels..........what a joke.

Who spends 9 grand just on a frame, forks, stem and post!? The Time stuff is nice, but not that nice. In fact, the Carbon-Ti composite design I want to do for my own next personal roadie would only be 5k for the frame, forks, stem and bars. That would leave a customer 4 grand for parts!!!!

I was juts reading in procycling mag today about "Chicken" Rassmussen & how he is a mechanical perfectionist and drives the pit crew nuts. Apparently Cadel Evans is the same - he even banned certain T-Mobile mechanics from working on his bike! Something to do with their MTB backgrounds and actually having to know what goes where on the bike when you bust something out on the trail in the back woods.

Or more likely, they're anal retentive freaks who also check to see if they've left the stove on three times before they leave the house.

Maybe...although by the looks of Rasmussen I'm not sure if he eats, so the stove wouldn't get much use
