It feels wierd to let go of the brakes in an emergency but in the end you can only slow down if you'e not sliding.

You're preaching to the converted. I was a pretty good skidder back in my young youth <10. I know with skids that you dont slow down and if you're not careful you will go over. Ive got a pretty good instinct on to let go when skidding.

EDIT: on the bike I was riding that day the back brake does jack the front only does anything. And it feels dsylexic at times (because of the setup) I am not dsylexic

nah, that's an old school myth from the days when brakes were totally crap, and some strength was required to make them work -- either that, or it came from motorbike world. The new brakes are awesome.

Just flick through any bike mag and you'll see 90% of the pros with the fron on the left. The exceptions are usually Aussie or Yank riders. :)

I'll go out and clean the rim a bit later and see how that rates.

Yes we do. I don't like to confuse things. When I raced BMX, right was front, motorsickles were the same.
I had a ride on a mates six13 which was the other way around... just didn't feel natural.
I even set my road bike up to race pattern shift to avoid confusion. Road=1-down, 5-up... race=1-up, 5-down. Before I did that, I lost a race by shifting the wrong way with two bikes up my clacker. Instant 3rd place.

this is just one example -- believe me, I can post 1,000 more:)

I.

yeah, fair enough. You don't wanna be flying down the Eastern Fwy at 220kmh and put the wrong brake on. :)

I'll swap them over in the next few weeks when I change the bar tape.

Odin 05-18-06 12:20 AM

It's so ingrained that when I wheelie a motorbike, (we used to do such childish things at warmup/practice :D ) and it starts getting a bit high, instead of using the rear (right foot) brake, I always grab the left bloody hand lever cos part of my brain thinks I'm on a pushie and it's the rear brake.
I had a reputation fer being quite **** at them cos of that.

well that won't be in bike racing maybe in something to do with economics though

was_bmxer 05-18-06 01:55 AM

on the whole brake thingy. I always had the back brake on the right, every bike. BMX with one lever only, right. Whe I started riding Motorcycles, I would have to really think it out a lot, sometimes in traffic I would be hard on the front brake with the clutch in as well???

No problems now. It seems natural to have the front on either side for either bike.

Well sometimes I confuse myself at 5:30 am going down a local hill to meet the lads when I'm still half asleep and I keep asking myself which brake is which? I just feather them both then.

I just cleaned the rear rim up, havent bothered to see if its done anything. Did notice however that the wheel has a slight spot where it isnt true, I am not bothering to fix it. Should I?

62vette 05-18-06 02:11 AM

Get the wheel trued (or do it yourself) It will definitely make the brakes grab.

That got me thinking so I just popped into the workshop. Yup one lever, back brake, right (1980 DiamondBack Senior Pro BTW). I must've started doing it the other way when we started doing freestyle cos we had both brakes then. 1983?

pshaw 05-18-06 02:14 AM

Jeez you fellas have been busy... Nice pickup on the new bike.... happy riding.

Watch out for US helmets if you intend to race as the dont have the Aussie compliance sticker.
Q. Is this a problem for regular riding?

Oh yeah and I saw Adam & the Ants live at the glasgow apollo when I was 10, my mum took me and my brother and some friends... there was an intermission and she told us the concert was over and took us home at halfway  That was after getting stuck in a toilet cubicle and having to climb out...:p

Might be if there's an accident and insurance is involved.

Its a very small whack, actually it took a bit of noticing. Should I leave it or fix it? I havent had much success truing rear wheels.
