Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The 'I love my Trek' thread is over the other side of the planet.

Ferchrisakes a bike is a bike. Two nice triangly things, splash of paint and your done. Fundamentally all road bikes look pretty mush the same. They only ever look really good if there's a lithe female triathlete on board. (sorry matagi, it had to be said)

...and yes Thylo, you have permission to weep for me and my ignorance

From what I hear it's almost impossible NOT to draft at Noosa. There's so many entrants that it's more like dodgem cars....

BTW Good descending skills will come in handy for avoiding carnage whist at high speed back down the hill.

Hey jocko...come down south & do the Warny instead.

(Just to clarify....that's the Melbourne to Warrnambool race & not you in a thong getting jiggy with 2 chicks either - sorry!)

I'd love to but the distance is the thing he's worried about, and at 260km its longer than the Grafton. Sure I can do the miles, but his thinking is that I'd be toast in a race environment, and even toastier if I raced any races (like the state masters champs) in the weeks following.

Me, being a noob, will have to cool my heels for a while. Sort like being a sprinter in a 4 month long road race, "just stay patient, just stay patient....".

maybe next year

Well I've joined the world of road riding last week.

Lashed out and bought a roadie (Giant OCR Zero 2006).. Nothing too special as it's just a training bike to do some road kays and the price was right ($1800). I'll upgrade to a thylo frame in a month or two hopefully.

I've never ridden a roadie before and it is amazing how efficient they are. I did a loop from Brunswick down to Mordialloc and back (90km) in about 2hr 30mins. Averaged just under 36km/h for the full trip and just under 37km/h for the way down.

That's like 5km/h faster than I could ever done on the MTB.

Couldn't believe it.

Next ride I go on with you, I'm collapsing one of your lungs and making you wear a backpack with ten bricks in it.

I've got to wonder how Civic stays in business. The worst store ever. They didn't check our cruisers before delivery, and couldn't even extract a broken screw (that I pointed out a month before delivery). Their solution was to order a new bike. No kidding. I called 3 times about some accessories, and they never called me back. Not a good way to make sales. And seeing as how they're mathematically challenged and undercharged us by about $200, I thought they'd jump at the chance to get some more of my money.

But it was all for the ladies and who was i to rain on his parade? sooooooooo i need some clarification - is that really a 100km ride when you have a 'lunch break' half way??? what is that all about???
I'd go so far to say that a 100k ride that encounters any traffic lights isn't a 100k ride, but then again I did 40kms in the burbs on Friday and it killed me, so what do I know?
