Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Synergy was UGE back in the '70s, another workshop favorite back then.

Also the first time I've ridden the Legnano in a couple years.
Mythical indeed. The group rides I participate in are usually 14 guys and one or maybe two females, if that. But then, the ride temp is not rated as “social” but the guys are very social at the rest stops and regroups.

My wife and I ride alone as not usually in a group on Sundays. Just us and we are usually a little tired from the previous 6 days or so.

But, this is the usual scenario and today was no exception.

Me: Peggy, I'm tired. Can we ride short like 15-16 miles or so and easy pace?
Her: I agree, I'm smashed and it's too windy anyway.
Me (the idiot): Well, if we turn here, well get 16 but if we go up here, we'll get 18 miles. It's into the 15 + wind but we can do it with e-assist.
Her (with a poker face): OK.

Her, later: if we go straight here, I think we can get 21 miles.
Her, later yet: If we go this way and climb this grade in to the wind and blah, blah, blah, we can fly on the tailwind and get a couple more miles.
Me: Whatever.

Final was 26 miles at 17.1 mph with an 18 mph wind 81º, starting RHA of 85%. Sunny.

So much for a one hour 15-16 mile.

I'm sure next Sunday will be no different and also just as massively enjoyable and entertaining.

Our dog made a diarrhea mess on our dining room rug, which ultimately made us cancel the Italy trip. Dog cost $1,500 new. The rug cost about $1k plus the lost costs. Can't say it wasn't a close call.

Also "stakeholders" and "At the end of the day, it's all about people."

One startup I worked for, the CEO had a tendency to say crap like "at the end of the day it's all about people." I said, "I thought at the end of the day, it's all about going home?" He laughed humorlessly, but then, he did a lot of stuff humorlessly.

As a biologist, I tend to use those words to denote actual ecosystems and synergy, rather than as corporate gobbdegook.

No kidding. Today I tried a group ride with a different group of Old Guys On Old Bikes, and it was all guys. If I wanted to meet women, I'd do something else.

Not only that, but it had a thick pad, so all the doors had about an inch taken off the bottom.

When I discovered club #2 many of their rides were close to 50/50. Lots of fun on those rides but when they restarted after c-19 a lot of people didn't come back.
My main club will sometimes have 6 or 7 women in a 20+ group. We also lost a lot of membership after c-19. Some of them started their own group rides.

A good series i can recommend is The Day of the Jackal from 2024. I am watching it on Peacock. I'm 5 episodes in. This was a book that was made into a movie in the early 70's. I think it was on network TV back in the 70's.

Next trip for cycling and snoozeball is set. Going to Boulder at end of July. Will see Rockies game. Will bring my bike and hope to climb Mt Evans. Will consider Pikes Peak but that may be a hill too far/hard.

My current bailout gear is 30/28. I may buy a cassette with a 32 or 34 for this trip. Advice?
