If I was going on a C&V ride TBH I'd be kinda pissed if there wasn't a cafe stop mid ride
. And some wool jerseys and cycling caps! If money and space were no object I would own at least one classic steel roadie like what genejockey has. Something with campy record 9sp.

Reconsidering my needs when it comes to: commuter style steel roadie. Currently thinking Soma Double Cross. Gearing and everything else TBH. I had a couple questions that I'd like to pose to the hive mind here before going to Bicycle Mechanics subforum:
1) the frame I will acquire (Soma or Surly) will likely have 135 mm rear spacing. The adapters on my trainer are 130 mm QR which is compatible with my TT bike. I don't want to have to change the end caps on the trainer twice or more per week. This is solvable with a simple spacer on a 135 mm skewer, but here is the question - can that spacer be on one end (vs one for each end), ideally opposite the QR handle? That way I don't have to remove the skewer to swap bikes, I just unthread the cap on the QR and take a spacer on or off.
2) Is it OK to have my bike configured for an 11 speed casstte with large cogs (ideally 40t or higher) and then try to ride it on the trainer with an ultegra r8000 11-28t cassette? Should be fine as long as the spacing is the same yeah? I think this might be a dumb question about chain length that I'm not grasping

That ain't C&V. That's just "an old bike". You need something with 8 speeds or less, downtube shifters, and, if you can manage it, non-aero brake levers! Mrs. Peel here is the perfect C&V ride, except for the clipless pedals, but I'm to old to try and relearn Clips'N'Straps!

We're getting old! My first bike was a Centurion w indexed Shimano 600 Arabesque, DT shfiters. It worked flawlessly. Thinking of setting up my commuter steel roadie w DT shifters

Hasn't big john talked about getting burritos mid ride? I can't imagine that, assuming it's the usual California burrito that could feed a family of 4!

Our usual 6 hour club rides involve stopping for food. When I toured I figured I was eating 6000 calories per day. One time on a 5 day tour we had a tough, 11 hour day with stiff headwinds for the last 40 miles. We stopped for lunch and dinner on that day.
I can do okay with eating a decent amount during a ride but nothing like others I know. Forum member Biker395 is notorious for being able to down huge amounts of food and still drop most of the others on a climb. One time 3 of us went to Svenhards' in Solvang. They bring a pot of coffee and a tray of Danish pastries to the table. 2 of us had 2 Danishes each while my other friend had 8 of them and still kicked our butts on the hills when we got back on the bikes.

Hey if I hear Mariah Carey and Destiny's Child on the Old School radio station now, then 9sp campy counts as C&V.

As for rear spacing, Soma and Surly frames are both steel so why not just cold set the rear down to 130? Just gorilla squeeze the rear dropouts until they're 130mm apart and you can run a standard road hub just like your other road bikes.

If you haven’t watched this video, it is not only inspirational but also wonderful.

From Strava, measured 4.6 W/kg for 1 minute.

But since this 78-year-old former pro and national champion Sid admittedly did not have a computer to record his effort, it's hard to know his actual power.
My competitive bone was tickled a bit when watching that. Too bad that unlike Ned Overend, he doesn't Strava his rides -- they would provide something for us old ****s to shoot for.

Do they allow loud laughing in Hawaii? Or just a low "ha"?
